Spruce, born in the heart of the Nature Realm to two nurturing and determined Nocturnes, is a sweet, hyper and easygoing dragon. Coming from an extremely diverse background, Spruce learned from a young age to be accepting of all dragons and their Realm, species, and jobs. His mother, originally from the Plague Realm and ashamed of the destruction she’d caused, raised Spruce from a hatchling to believe in the good, and that every dragon deserves a chance. As he grew older and witnessed some siblings go to war, and many other take off into other realms such as Ice, Water, and Wind, Spruce realized that he always had—and always will—belong with the forest.

When he was a young adult dragon, Spruce experienced seeing his father serve under the Gladekeeper. Proud and confident that he would return, Spruce spent the rest of his youth carelessly playing hide-and-seek, tag, and sky-racing with his sisters RiverJewel and Zurina. His father never returned. The news brought a vast amount of grief and darkness over Spruce’s family. His remaining sisters left, leaving him alone with his mother, who couldn’t move or fly for days. Spruce desperately tried to comfort her, nudging and climbing on her like he did when he was a little hatchling. Anything interactive, but nothing worked.

Eventually, Spruce grew up and left the Nature Realm, leaving his mother in the care of his clan. He ventured immediately to the neighboring Earth Realm, and lived for many weeks in The Shattered Plain. Some nights he would find himself so desperate for company, he would mimic Spirals (per natural Nocturne behavior) and attempt to tie himself in knots. During his travels, Spruce heard rumors of a Wandering Healer, supposedly an angel-like Nocturne who provided the herbs for healing, but vanished before injured dragons could fully recover.

It was the renewed idea that every dragon got another chance that led Spruce to encounter Alder, the daydreaming Tundra of Oak’s clan near the edge of The Shattered Plain, bordering the Everbloom Gardens. Alder led Spruce to Oak, who accepted him into the clan about a month after accepting Hazel. Spruce very quickly made friends with every dragon in the clan, overjoyed and ecstatic at being with others after so long of being alone.

One day, Spruce was exploring the area of his new clan, hoping to gather pine needles for acupuncture. While he was out, he noticed a quiet and rather hostile-looking Nocturne holding Herbal Plantain, Redblood Sapper and Umbra Parthenium—the beginning mixture of a cream that healed burns, and about to grab Dwarf Mushrooms—rumored to make dragons shrink. Spruce quickly pointed this out to the Nocturne, and was met with resentment. Spruce shrugged it off until he got hurt during a tackling game, where he again met the Nocturne, who he discovered was named Hazel. Determined to break her shell, Spruce asked her questions and soon grew close to and even enjoyed her silence personality. There was just so much mystery! And before long, Spruce fell in love with her and tried to impress her and get her attention many times by personally tending to the injured.

Spruce introduced Hazel to Alder, and from then on, whenever a dragon got hurt, Spruce tended to their wounds with gentleness and precision while Hazel made the necessary potions. When Spruce and Hazel had hatchlings, Spruce was thrilled and rarely slept in excitement, contrary to Hazel’s calm and meticulous manner. Spruce promised never to go to war, refusing to leave his hatchlings to the possibility of losing a father like he lost his.

When Hazel fell into depression, it reminded him all too much of his mother’s descent into sadness, and distracted himself with making sure his last hatchling, Violet, was loved and cared for. He took him down to the streams of the Nature Realm to distinguish different seaweeds, and to the mountains of his new Realm to pick out soft leaves and herbs. After his son brought Hazel out of her depression, seeing her content and making potions again, Spruce really knew he was meant to be a doctor—healing others as a friend, husband, and most importantly a father, was the greatest feeling he had ever felt.

Spruce enjoys flying through the trees, exploring, being with his son, and visiting the sections of the Nature Realm where he grew up. He loves living in his secret nest with Hazel and Violet, personally tending to their clients and listening to Alder’s tales of insect-catching—Alder always was such a funny little thing to Spruce.
