Biography
“Hush child, you’ll be alright.”
Kaya had murmured these words thousands of times. To hatchlings, to dragons, to this serthis on the slab. And each time, they had been true. She did not lie, for lying would be to disrespect Mother. And to disrespect Mother would be to throw away everything she believed in. It was her duty as a healer to tell the truth.
Some doubted her craft. She loved them all the same. She loved them because Mother loved them. Mother loved all her children. The ones that were faithful, the ones that went astray… Mother cared for all. Kaya liked to think that the faithful ones were loved more (even if it was just a little).
Mother deserved tribute. As her chosen representative, Kaya would give it to her. And in exchange, Mother would protect them from danger. As a reward for their loyalty, the tribute would serve alongside Mother until the fall of their world. But not everyone understood the noble cause. And so the rituals must be performed in secret, hidden from prying eyes.
The preparations were complete.
“You will be okay, child.”
A whisper. A lullaby. A gleam of silver, raised high above her head.
“You go to a good cause.”
The blade plunged down.
