Nanaxtal (Nanax)
Living in the dark, yearning for the light
Seer of Things That Shall Come
she/her

You can’t live in the light without casting a shadow. Everyone knew that. It was why the Shadow flight was their neighbor; the Sunbeam Ruins overshadowed everything. The legacy of times long forgotten echoing across the land, darkening the outer fringes of its reach. It was something they all knew, but no one gave it much thought. As Lantana trudged her way through the barren swampland, all she was left with was her thoughts.

They swirled around her head like angry bees, buzzing in her ears. Indignation wasn't an emotion she was accustomed to, but she was quickly becoming acquainted with it.

Slipping in the slick mud, she landed in the water with a heavy plop. Cold, green tinted water soaked her fur and chilled her to the bone. It clung to her in a sloping, stinking mess, and made the experience that much more miserable.

There wasn’t time to stop, though. Shaking herself off, she continued on, duly taking note of her darkening surroundings. It wouldn’t much longer before she crossed the border into the Shadow flight. Already the air was turning cold and the canopy of trees was growing darker and more ominous.

The marsh she was in was quickly growing darker, faint blue fungi dotting rotted wood and stagnant pools of water. Ahead of her, her shadow loomed, stretched out on the ground in an elongated distortion of itself. In the inconsistent light, it danced, leaping from water-logged trunk to squat bush. The ground slowly dried until she was walking over hard-packed clay and thin, crumbling patches of grass.

It wasn’t until she was well into the depths of the Shadow domain that she realized she was no longer alone. The faint light was hardly enough to see by, the thick night clung to her in a physical ink. There was a low, haggard breathing rasping in her ear, barely perceptible above the thudding of her heart. Out of the corner of her eye, she could make out movement, a dragon-shaped silhouette coiling like smoke.

You always thought you were alone.

She skidded back as a cold voice chuckled in her ear, dark eyes blinking inches in front of her face. Swatches of bright color, the same as the glowing fungi, swirled on its fur. Pointed teeth gleamed, a cruel sneer fixed on a translucent face.

But you were never alone.

Cold prickled along the back of her neck. As the form solidified, she was able to make out her own face, dark, cruel eyes fixing her in a steely gaze. It stepped away from her, feet distorting as they touched the ground. They stretched towards her, fading until it became her shadow. The pads of her feet burned and she lashed out, magic ripping itself from her chest. Blinding light filled the darkness burning through her dark doppelganger. The light faded, leaving an impenetrable darkness behind.

A slick, gray feeling in the back of her mind and a low, distorted howl echoing into the night was all that was left of her shadow. But she didn't feel safe. The night was waiting for her. The darkness was biding it's time, slipping its dark fingers into her mind.

I'll always be here.

Teeth snapping together, she spun around. There was nothing there but a crumbling pile of rotted wood. Lowering her head, she sniffed at the ground, hissing at the metallic stench.

Poor little child. You stared at the sun so long you've forgotten all about the shadow you've cast. But that's ok. I haven't forgotten.
I'll never forget.
And…
I'll never leave you.
