The red rose symbolises passionate feelings, whether those of hatred or true love. Traditionally, red roses are given to those who you want to show love and passion, people who you have great respect for, and those who have shown great courage. It may also symbolise a union that will never fade. Red roses declare a willingness to sacrifice oneself, whether for one's own passion or for the well-being of others.
Sakura, or cherry blossoms, embody the intensity and ephemerality of life, appreciation of the transience of beauty, and acceptance of mortality (もののあわれ). Japanese pilots would paint them on the sides of their planes before embarking on a suicide mission and even take branches of the trees with them on their missions. Cherry blossoms are richly symbolic, and have been utilized in Japanese art, manga, anime, film, and at musical performances for ambient effect.
