Everyone knows that you should never stray too close to the Wyrmwound. Not even plague dragons are immune to the smoldering toxins found within. The young mirror had not listened. They had crept right up to the edge, ignoring the scorching ground beneath their claws and the foul-smelling steam that muddled their senses. They had not noticed the eyes watching, waiting, creeping. They did not feel the subtle changes taking place deep within their skin. The mutation was one that worked slowly, engineered so that the carrier would not notice any difference until it was far too late to reverse the effects. At first it was just one eye. It appeared in the span of one night, complete with full vision. Each night a few more appeared, until Fomite’s entire back was covered with the blinking orbs. They were ever watching, ever waiting. Vein-like protrusions curled upwards and formed a connection to the wings. The final step of the transformation was a mouth full of vicious fangs between their shoulderblades - although it was useless for eating or speaking, it could be quite expressive with toothy grins and frowns. Surprisingly, after the initial shock, Fomite took the changes rather well. Perhaps they had always known that something had accompanied them back from the Wyrmwound. They were often completely silent, and spoke little even when delivering messages. Maybe it was anxiety brought on by their condition – after all, the sight of a dragon covered in eyes made many individuals uncomfortable. Combined with a tendency to self-deprecate, most dragons were unsure how to properly interact with them. They truly were a gentle soul, regardless of their appearance; the few who were willing to befriend them found a dedicated companion in the strange mirror. Very little escaped Fomite’s notice. The combination of a normal mirror’s heat vision and their unique mutation made it nearly impossible to catch them by surprise. Because the eyes were able to spin in any direction and had no need to blink, they were incredibly useful and efficient. They also quite frequently terrified other dragons, except for Vector – a Ridgeback who knew all too well the parasitic threats native to the Scarred Wasteland. Once, long ago, a mirror had been watched. Now, they were the watcher. Was it a disease? Was it a blessing? They did not know. But it was part of them now, and they would be lost without it. |
