ELIA the Confectioner

Nothing May Mask Long The Sweetness Of Decay

"Be right with you," a soft and breezy voice calls from the back of the shop.

The cloaked stranger peruses the shop, drifting along the dizzying array of sweets on display as they wait. The clattering of kitchenware eventually stills, and the stranger turns their attention from the candies, to the entrance way into the back rooms.

A woman stands there now, drying her hands on a pristine white apron. She is dressed all in black, a serviceable outfit trimmed with subtle lace. Her candy-pink hair is styled in short and glamorous waves and adorned with a gem and enamel flower hairpiece, and around her throat is a matching pigeonsblood ruby, set on a lace and velvet choker, striking against the smooth sable skin of her throat.

"You are the Confectioner?" the stranger inquires, their voice neutral and monotone. They can sense no other presence in the rivershoppe, but there is a strange resonance here, a hidden power kept in careful check. This little shop is far from what it seems.

"I am," says Elia, stepping out from behind her shop counter. She sizes up the stranger, with their travel-stained cloak drawn tight around themself, their hood pulled low over their features. "How can I help you?"

"I have need of your skills." The stranger smiles, the teeth of their grin glinting white from behind the shadows over their face.

"If it's a custom order, let me get you a form." Elia smoothes down her apron and turns away towards the drawers behind her counters. "I ask for at least 3 days notice on custom requests."

"Alas," the stranger interrupts, lowering the hood of their cloak. "These are not quite the skills of which I speak, though I do not doubt your talent."

"Ah," Elia pauses, slowly returning the papers she'd pulled out back to their drawer. "I wondered when you would come. Very well, then."

She waves her fingers, and the ruby at her throat glows with a magenta aura. She gestures casually towards the back room entrance, a gauzy curtain of rose pink silk loosening itself from its ties at her command. The curtain sweeps across the entranceway, refastening itself at the opposite mooring; the room beyond is different now. The kitchen it had lead to moments before is gone, this room instead obscured by a thick, pink-tinged mist which rolls and spills out toward them.

Elia gestures again towards the entrance, curtsying to the stranger. "Right this way, if you please."

A faint, sweet scent carries on the evening airs. Through the fog-shrouded walkways, the sugary intoxicant leads the curious and the cunning along the breeze, hunting for the source of the strange and salivating perfume caught on the edges of the night.

Deep in the heart of the maze of tethered rafts and piers of the floating city of Myracc, there lies an innocuous little riverbarge. From an outsider’s view, it’s no different in appearance from the other shoppes and apothecaries of the many hedgewitches and miredwelling peddlers; strings of coloured glass and beads hang amongst bundles of drying herbs, swathes and curtains and flags of brightly dyed gossamer silks, and carefully wrought charms and wards. Drifting betwixt them are a myriad of tiny floating incandescent orbs, flickering and filling the porch with a soft glow.

Once through the beaded curtain door of shell and beachglass, however, the shop within is far from the typical herbalist’s stall.

Sugary confectioneries line the dozens of shelves and pastel-painted tables. Spun-sugar sculptures sit in a glass display case, next to a line of baskets filled with all manner of candied delights. Marzipan, Turkish Delight, candied nuts, sugar-crusted gummies, preserved fruits, hard candy travel sweets in every conceivable flavour, caramels, taffys, fudges, and several dozen different kinds of chocolate truffles all can be found here; a dizzying array of hand-crafted sweets. A pastry case filled with petit fours, eclairs, cannolis, and delicate-looking cake slices in delectably arranged dishes sit on display next to the counter.

The Confectioner is an artisan, a master of her craft. In her kitchen, she creates her amazing delicacies, a candymaker of the highest calibre. Travellers come from miles and miles to try her wares, found deep in the misty reeds of the mire-city. Most who seek her out come for the mouthwatering fantasies she offers, but a few, very rare customers come seeking something else; a skill far more sinister than sugarspinning.
