The Engineer

Deep beneath the Shifting Expanse lies an enormous cavern that once housed the clan's laboratory. It was magnificent in it's time. Yet on this day, what electricity still supplies the lab comes infrequently, providing only brief flickers of light. The whir of machines is intermittent, and a layer of dust and debris has coated everything in sight. Rubble blocks the entrance to the lab and clutters the space. Only the smallest and most determined of Ridgebacks might reach the lab's center now....

Elektra was born within the Cloud Song with a free spirit and an inquisitive nature. As she grew, she became known for dismantling and reassembling any dragon-made object she could get her claws on. In time, it became clear that she held a deep appreciation for logic and reason as well as an insatiable desire to learn about the world around her. Together her rapidly accumulating knowledge base and care-free nature made her a natural inventor. Creativity and ingenuity were her strongest assets, and when she at last became bored with the simplicity of life upon the Windswept Plateau, she set out for the neighboring Shifting Expanse.

Unsurprisingly, science and engineering suited Elektra perfectly. Though her eyes betray her, she is the picture of a dragon borne of Lightning. Within the Stormcatcher's domain her experiments rapidly gained traction, and she turned from simple inventions to complex designs that required blueprints and multiple stages of planning as well as trial-and-error. In her new home, Elektra thrived and provided clan Lykos with a number of inventions and technology to make life beneath the Tempest Spire easier and more efficient. In no time at all she earned the respect and admiration of her new den-mates.

Eventually she took a mate, and one of their offspring joined her in the lab, taking to her mother's craft as a quickly as a Grey River Flight takes to treasure. Elektra took great pleasure in seeing one of her kin enjoy her work nearly as much as she did herself. And yet it was not to last...

Perhaps it was fate, or perhaps it was the Shade from the start, but Elektra's daughter and apprentice Adina eventually grew bored with what she felt were simple experiments and projects that her mother undertook. After the young Skydancer learned of the Shade from Vergere a maddened inspiration took hold of her. Elektra was so focused on her work that she did not notice the subtle changes in Adina's aura, the malicious intent that grew to overpower all others....

When Adina began to work independently in the lab without Elektra's oversight a sense of pride filled her. And yet in time, she would come to realize that her pride was misplaced. After the completion of a particularly complex piece of machinery, Adina turned to the Shade to animate her creation. When Elektra discovered what had transpired, guilt and horror filled every fiber of her being. It took the combined might of the clan's strongest warriors in addition to Elektra's keen insight in order to stop the monstrosity from destroying the lair's delicate infrastructure. Though they were successful in defeating the Shade-animated creation, Elektra's lab suffered irreparable damage. The dragons involved in stopping Adina's creation still count themselves lucky to have escaped with their lives.

Elektra did not escape the battle unscathed. In fleeing the rapidly crumbling lab, her wings were crushed by falling debris. Despite their healer's best efforts, her wing never healed completely. Fortunately her ingenuity allowed her to create and power a pair of mechanical wings that still allow her to fly when necessary.

Since that fateful day, Elektra has spent more of her time on simple tasks and experiments while devoting a considerable portion of her energy to reconnecting with her natural abilities as a Skydancer. Not a day goes by that she does not regret her past detachment from these abilities. Had she been in-tune enough to read her daughter's aura, it all could have been prevented....

Fortunately she has found solace and comfort in her new mate, Osiris. His own keen ability to read other's auras has helped her return this ability to her skill set. Spending time in his presence has eased some of the guilt and depression that has haunted her since the day of the accident. There may yet be a future in which she returns to her laboratory, albeit in a different manner than before. Whatever her future holds, fortune smile upon both her and her mate when they met by chance.
