Melancholy didn’t always possess the sight. She had a happy childhood—born to a prosperous clan under a different name. Her parents were the picture of happiness, and provided her with everything she could ever need. There was no touch of melancholy to color her youth. And then, as she matured into adulthood, she began to See. Little things, at first. An unexpected rain. A cache of silver. The departure of a clan mate to a new clan. With each premonition, each new truth, talk in the clan grew. She was praised as a blessing, her sight—a gift. They didn’t know it was a curse.

As time passed, her visions grew. She saw more below the surface—more of darkness. Terrible things lurked in that darkness. The resounding emptiness behind a cheating spouse’s declaration of love. A horrible accident that maimed the wing of one of the newborn hatchlings. She learned of dissatisfaction and disappointment, damage and despair. And then she learned of death. The early passing of her best friend—a freak accident. She saw all these things, but could not change anything. Every attempt to change Fate ended the same way. She was fated to observe, but never to alter Fate.

Surrounded by whispers of omens and bad luck, Melancholy decided to isolate herself and traveled far away from her clan in a self-imposed exile. It was lonely, but the closer she got to others the more intimately she gleaned of death and despair. Rather than face the pain of knowing all there was to be lost, she decided she couldn’t lose what she didn’t have. Her separation did grant her some peace, but it never granted her happiness. It was an empty life.

And then she came across the Troupe. They were traveling through the Wispwillow Grove on their way back from a performance in the Tangled Wood. Melancholy had forgotten what it was like to spend time with others—find comfort in their company. And then the Troupe came crashing into her life. She was invited in with open arms, embraced by Myst and Shelta. And as Melancholy grew to know them she realized it would be inconceivable to leave them, and, yet, impossible to stay. She had known enough loss for a lifetime, and she couldn’t stand to know that pain again.

So she prepared to depart from the Troupe as they made their journey South. Before she could fade back into obscurity however, she was stopped by (Clanmate). “You know we move quite often,” she said. “We never stay in one place long. Never long enough for you to see too much. If you keep just far enough from the rest of us, you shouldn’t have a problem. We’d love for you to come along, you see. And if you’re worried about making your keep, well, you could provide fortunes for those on the road. Little, superficial tellings, nothing too deep or grievous, you understand.”

Melancholy couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing—it was almost too good to be true. It was true a nomadic existence would keep her from darker visions, if she was never in one place long enough to pick up on more serious things. And she was lonely. The Troupe would be a family, something to be a part of, even if she always had to be slightly apart from it.

And using her gift to provide something, perhaps do good for others, would grant her life a meaning it never had. She had been given the gift of the Sight. For good or bad—it was all she had—she might as well put it to use.

The third eye is a sensitive one -
Never squinting, never blinking
Never turning away to the loss nor won,
Disregard to the user's thoughts and thinking.

Never turning away from the guts & gore,
Never turning away when sorrow grows more & more,
Not once will it close at a dragon's fall & demise
Never will it try to cover & disguise.

It will tell the mind without a single hesitation,
No mind the spear-like horror at the death & falls
It shows all the grievances in presentation,
Because in the end,
All means all.
