Biography
Aspartame is an artificial sweetener comprised of two amino acids: aspartic acid and phenylalanine. This sweetener is quite potent, as it's up to 200x sweeter than table sugar. It was approved by the FDA for commercial use in the USA in 1981. It's a popular sweetener in cold and room temperature foods, as it's not heat stable and breaks down when heated.
Since its rise in popularity, aspartame has been the subject of many controversies and accusations, including speculations that aspartame is carcinogenic and causes blood cancers such as leukemia. This scare became especially prominent in 2005, when a study involving rats linking aspartame to leukemia was published in the European Journal of Oncology. However, research supporting these claims is shaky at best; aspartame is, according to the FDA, "one of the most exhaustively studied substances in the human food supply, with more than 100 studies supporting its safety."
However, in rare cases, the consumption of aspartame must be greatly limited. Individuals with the rare, hereditary disease phenylketonuria struggle to break down phenylalanine, one of the two amino acids in aspartame. This is why the FDA requires all consumables containing aspartame to include a phenylalanine disclaimer.
For over thirty years, aspartame has been used to sweeten everything from sodas to over-the-counter medication, and no such links to cancer have been found. However, the public opinion is still wary of this curious, ultra-sweet powder.
Remember: as with any other consumable, the dose makes the poison! :)
