Seric had always been the quiet sort. His tone was gentle, and his heart was kind. It was not fitting for a dragon of the Ashfall Waste. Those of his home held a fiery passion in all they did. Seric‘s gentle demenour was out of place.
Often, other dragons would ambush him. They would try to make him aftraid, make him angry, make him ‘express’ himself. All they succeeded in was making him stronger, faster, and more alert.
His quietness seemed to gain an edge. A warning. Seric started fighting back more and more. Yet still, he remained calm.
It was the coldest month when Seric left the clan. There was no reason to stay. Every dragon seemed to greet him with a glare, or a fearful glance. Seric felt no loyalty to these dragons. He had learned enough to survive on his own, so that’s what he did. He left, and headed north.
When he flew over the water flight territory, he landed as little as possible. He had always been warned that the water was dangerous. Past the never-ending waves was a dark forest. Seric recognized this as the tangled woods, Home of the ever elusive shadow dragons.
Seric tried to stay here, but it was hard. He stood out too much. And so, he moved again. After more traveling, Seric ran into a fae. They were young, but ever. They said he looked lost. They told Seric that their home would welcome him.
Seric doubted the youngster’s words, but the little fae was so enthuastic, he couldn’t refuse. So, Seric followed.
What he found was acceptance. The fae has not lied. The clan welcomed him to stay, and so he did.
Seric had been in the clan for nearly a year when his little friend gave him a gift. The child had grown, and had taken up magic. The gift was a ‘new skin’ of sorts. It was a way to blend in. His shining golds and reds had always stood out, sometimes causing prey to run from him on hunting trips. In the tangled woods, brightness was more of a hinderance than a help. With this gift, his scales seemed to dull, blending into the shadows around him. Blue stood out, similar to the glowing flora of the forest. It was perfect.
As time progressed, Seric began to feel isolated from the clan. They didn’t treat him any different, but it felt like he was a guest. He hadn’t made any connections, and his only friend was the fae. Conversation with the other dragons was short, clipped, polite.
Seric was bored. That would, however, soon change. It was a regular payroll by the boarder, where Shadow and light merged, when Seric saw her. It was a guardian who looked more shadow than light. She crossed into the the tangled woods, and kept going. She seemed to not be paying much attention to where she was going. After a while, she seemed to snap out her daze. She was heading towards the clan.
Seric dropped down in front of her. He wanted to know what she was doing in shadow territory. She said she wanted to be lighter.
Seric thought that was quite ironic. It was the opposite of his problem, but it may have the same solution. She did not seem to be lying, so Seric gestured for her to follow him. As he kept from tree to tree, he thought. He had seen this dragon before. She had been with others. What had they called her? Ah yes, Mae.
Seric watched her especially close when the entered the clan itself. Just because he belived her didn’t mean he trusted her. She looked around in confusion. And kept looking. Service called her name, and her gaze snapped to him. He gestured her to follow him. He followed a familiar path, leading to the home of his only friend. He told the little one he needed something light... for a guardian.
Despite the suprise, his friend agreed, and began looking.
After a while, they came back out. It wasn’t the brightest thing, but there wasn’t much choice. The call for light things was not very large in the tangled woods. The guardian seemed pleased. As she left, Seric made an impulse decision. He told his friend he would be leaving. He was tired of feeling like a guest in his own clan.
So, he followed the guardian. He saw them use the scroll, and saw their exclamation of joy. They were so happy. They were also going the wrong way.
Eventually they seemed to realize this, and asked for directions. Seric lead them back easily. He knew these woods like he knew himself.
When they reached the boarder, Seric asked to join her. She paused only a second, and then responded positive. Her words were filled with kindness, but Seric had been around long enough to see that something was wrong. There was cunning in her eyes, but Seric payed it no mind.
When they arrived, Seric saw her angle. Compared to him, she was as bright as the sun. How perfect.
Well, Seric had made his choice. Now it was only a matter of how it would play out.
