Biography

Norrington is a dragon with hefty penance to pay.

Born into a well-to-do Ice clan, he joined the Southern Icefield's Navy in his youth and dedicated himself to purging the waters of Sornieth of pirates. He quickly rose to the rank of Commodore, bringing honour to his family and justice to the waves, and cementing his impeccable reputation.

Then he took a posting in the Starfall Isles, and his fortunes began to change.

He was assigned to Port Royale, a large and well-established clan led by a kindly old Tundra known as the Governor. He quickly gained the clan's respect and was encouraged to court the Governor's daughter, a beautiful and intelligent Pearlcatcher named Swann. It should have been the pinnacle of his career. However, there was no spark between them. It was all too clear that she was infatuated with the blacksmith’s apprentice, Turner, and the only thing keeping the two of them apart was his over-inflated sense of propriety.

During Norrington's lacklustre and duty-bound attempts to woo Swann, he met Sparrow: a pirate captain without a ship who tried to steal a trinket from Swann. When captured, he said he wanted it in order to reclaim his ship, the ghostly Black Pearl, from its mutinous and cursed crew. In the adventure that followed, Sparrow escaped to regain his ship and Swann and Turner confessed their feelings, while Norrington was left scorned and humiliated.

For the next year, he pursued Sparrow. Duty turned to obsession as he chased him across Sornieth's seas, never quite fast enough to match the Black Pearl's preternatural speed. Then, one fateful night, when he was close enough to see the Pearl's black sails on the horizon, he tried to sail past the Magmablood Rebuke into an oncoming storm. While Sparrow and the Pearl rode the stormfront to safety, Norrington found his ship in the midst of a hurricane. His refusal to give up the chase cost him his crew, his commission and his life.

Desperately embittered by his fall from grace, he crawled into a rum bottle.

He found purpose again when he saw an opportunity to buy back his respectability and take revenge - but it came at a terrible cost. He betrayed Sparrow and inadvertently blighted the seas by giving a ruthless group of Ice traders control over the Shade-touched pirate Davy Jones. They commanded him not only to eradicate piracy altogether, but to kill everyone who stood in the way.

Norrington realised his terrible mistake when the death toll began to rise. He joined Sparrow and his pirate compatriots to reverse the damage, but he could not undo the consequences of his actions. Many good dragons and beastclan died before Davy Jones was freed and the traders were stopped. Norrington must live with that on his conscience.

He joined Sparrow's crew to try and redress his wrongs and repay his debts.

It galls him, sometimes, that he has become the very thing that he once so despised: a pirate. However, his experiences have proven beyond doubt that one can be a pirate and a good person - and that being on the right side of the law does not necessarily mean that someone has a moral compass.

Norrington gradually won over both the Black Pearl's crew and her captain. He has now risen to the position of first mate: a post he is more than happy to occupy, especially since it means he can effectively run the Black Pearl however he likes with Sparrow's blessing.

His relationship with Sparrow continued to shift as the pair grew close over many late-night conversations on deck. Norrington got to know the dragon himself instead of making assumptions about Sparrow as a pirate. Eventually, he admitted that his obsessive chase might not have been solely about justice, and Sparrow confessed that his constant teasing had always been a form of flirtation. Though they still bicker constantly, it's no secret that the Black Pearl's captain and first mate are in love.
