These are evidence of either unnecessary roughness or extreme carelessness. Kalma has a morbid fascination with the patterns and fractures of her victims' mangled bones,

and she keeps a sizable collection of bone fragments in her workplace. Each tidy heap is meticulously labeled; she counts and organizes them when she's bored.

DESCRIPTION

____There are some truly awful dragons out there. Dragons that are purely self-centered, dragons that have sunk so far on the ladder of morality they can almost touch the ground. Then there are the ones below them, the ones that really have hit rock bottom, the ones that don’t even care for themselves anymore. And below them we have the dragons that have lost all empathy, the ones whose only emotions seem to be varying degrees of emptiness. That's where you’ll find Kalma.

____The scariest thing about this coatl isn’t what she’s hiding, or what her real job is, or even where she came from. It’s how perfectly she blends in. Dragons meeting her for the first time would see a polite coatl lady from some distant plague clan, about as shocking and evil as a midsummer breeze. And that’s exactly what she wants them to see. They’d never wonder why she’s watching this dragon limp with such fascination, or why she always seems to be listening to that dragon cough. After all, she’s just some scatterbrained mother from the Wasteland. What harm could she possibly mean by it? But they don’t see the other Kalma. The true Kalma - the Kalma that knows exactly why all those dragons went missing in the days after she moved in.

____Every morning, Kalma says goodbye to her family and heads off to work at the docks, or the lumberyard, or the factory, depending on what’s available. These jobs are almost always found in “the next village over,” because good work has just been impossible to find nearby. Of course, if anyone actually went to the next village over and asked after the coatl, all they’d get is a bunch of blank stares. They never would have heard of her, for she never would have actually visited them. Why bother? After all, her real job is much closer to home, hidden deep in a forest or a cave, where no one will ever find it.

____Kalma works as a "private epidemiologist,” as she likes to put it. Her job, in short, is to create new strains of disease. Of course, she could test her creations using lab animals, but that would be far too droll. Instead she prefers to take a more personal approach to things. She’ll grab a dragon or two that won’t be missed, perhaps a traveler or a vagrant, and haul them off to her lab for some “experiments.” That way she can see her diseases’ effects up close, smell her victims’ breath for infection, check their eyes for yellowing, and document their pain. Then, when they've heaved their last shuddering breath, she’ll take the parts that haven’t been ravaged by her disease and sell them on the black market. The money she earns this way is more than enough for her to move to a new town and start all over again.

BIOGRAPHY

____In all of Kalma’s long, twisted life, she’s only ever cared for one thing: her family. She goes to great pains to hide her job from them, fearing what they’d do if they discovered who she really is. Her children grow up believing their mother is a kindly, absent-minded old coatl, and they leave home never knowing how wrong they are.

____Despite all of the horrible things she’s done, the coatl has but one regret: the loss of her first nest. She’d just moved to a port town between the Windswept Plateau and the Sea of a Thousand Currents. It was a small place, but it seemed safe enough to raise a family in, and crowded enough that a few straggling sailors wouldn’t be missed. Kalma and her mate, Alaz, settled in to stay. Their hatchlings were little more than children when the disaster came.

BIOGRAPHY P2

____Water Flight pirates, in a boat the size of a small city. They swarmed the wealthy little town, blasting through its meager defenses with ease. Kalma was at work when it happened, unaware that a mere mile away her children were being stolen from her. She returned home to find the town destroyed, her husband in shambles, and her hatchlings gone. From that day on she went out of her way to find pirates when looking for new test subjects, and she gave each one the same deal: their lives in exchange for her hatchlings’ locations. Years and nests later, she still hasn’t found them. They’d be adults now, if they survived at all, but that doesn't deter her. She has to keep looking. She has to know if they’re okay, if they’re safe, because if she gives up she'll lose her last feeble tether to humanity.
