Chime

Zima poked carefully into the massive pile that was Kegawa's personal hoard. Her long claws tapped lightly on a fall of coins that had cascaded to the floor and tried not to get tangled in one of the many bolts of silks the Skydancer had collected. As she investigated the immense hoard, something slipped and clattered to the ground noisily. The Wildclaw whirled, terrified that Kegawa had caught her once again and prepared to flee. Instead, she heard only a tinny chime and a faint melody.

At the bottom of the pile sat a small bronze chest, it's lid propped open. Inside rotated a tiny dragon, no larger than one of Zima's claws. The sound was issuing from the little casket. The Wildclaw slip-slid down the mound, her claws sending a shower of tiny gemstones clattering with her.

"Zima, not again!" Kegawa's voice echoed around the chamber. Fewmets! Zima swore internally, and scrambled off the assortment of treasure that had accompanied her in her slide. As the shadow of the Skydancer leapt into harsh relief on the wall she bolted out of the hoard, pausing long enough to scoop the music box up in one arm.

***
Later that night, Zima curled in her den, the thorny walls of the thicket she inhabited shielding her from view of her clanmates. The bronze music box sat on the ground before her, but no matter how many times she opened and closed the lid, she could not produce the chiming noises it was making earlier. The tiny dragon rotated around and around, taunting her with its silence.

"Shadowbinder take you - talk! Make a noise!" she whispered angrily, prodding at it with one pointed claw. The spring on which the figure perched bounced back and forth, squeaking. As if it was responding to her, the box finally played a few notes of melody and the figure gave a quarter turn to seemingly glare at her, it's tiny diamond-chip eyes catching the light and glinting slightly. She hissed at it, saliva splattering the bronze surface, and slammed the lid shut. It gave a few discordant notes and then was silent. Zima tossed it across her den and turned onto her side, pointedly facing away from it.

There was a clatter, and a few bars of tinkly music. Then, a light bloomed in the corner. Zima rolled and watched with wide eyes as a icy blue light grew around the music box, then abruptly faded. In its place sat a small bronze dragon, a perfect copy of the one inside the box. It opened white eyes and wobbled on unsteady feet towards her, its head craning one direction and the other as though it was not used to sight. As it approached, Zima noticed that its (??) face was glistening. It stopped about a foot from her, peered up into her face, and shook itself vigorously, splattering something viscous all over her. She realized with disgust that it was her own saliva. The tiny Nocturne then smiled, and gave a peeping, melodious chirp.

"I - what? Who - how - ?" Zima was cut off as the dragon pulled itself under her folded wing. As it got comfortable, it chimed again.

"Do you have a name?" she finally managed to ask, craning her neck around to peer at the dragon nestling under her, apparently trying to get warm. Its crystalline eyes blinked sleepily at her.

"How did you get here?" she murmured, almost to herself. The Nocturne leaned forward, until its face almost touched hers, and breathed heavily, the scent of oil and metal filling her nostrils. She coughed. In reply, the bronzed dragon chimed again, a trilling note and the melody she had heard in Kegawa's hoard that morning. Had her breath somehow brought it to life? How was that possible?

"I - I'm afraid I don't speak music box." The dragon made another foreign sound, a harsh grating noise like clockwork being wound too tightly. "Can I call you Chime, then?"

The dragon chirped happily, then nuzzled closer to her warm body. She gave a bewildered sigh, and lay down, fanning out her wing over the newcomer.

"This will be fun to explain to Kegawa." She muttered. Chime peeped, and fell asleep.
