Biography

O L E A N D E R
"I was born the child of the clan leader, now I am the dragon you come to when you need things done quietly. My path started when I was a fledgling, dabbling in the arcane as if it were a toy."

From an early age, Oleander had whatever treasure could buy and lacked for nothing. His early years were resplendent, his family lair plush with fine rugs, beautiful wall hangings, stunning art of stone and metal. He had tutors aplenty. As the child of the clan leader, his education was the finest as his teachers groomed him for the role of future leader.

This was all well and good, the young tundra dreamed of nothing beyond the bright dreams his family held for him. Until one night he actually dreamed. In this dream he traveled not over the Starfall Isles, but under them, into the dark places that no one speaks of, seeing the underground magic markets and their forbidden goods. Seduced by the wonders of the forbidden, he awoke and plotted how to escape his endless stream of teachers and responsibilities.

The opportunity never presented itself, so he made the opportunity. A little sleeping powder in the tea of his history tutor, something pearlcatcher senses would never smell, and he was free. From there it was a simple trip to the entrance his dreams had shown him in the time he waited, and he was in the underground market.

Oleander wasted no time in finding a book seller and acquiring a forbidden tome. A book, the seller told him, generally reserved for the sprites that made up the entourage of the Arcanist. Few had ever read the contents. Fewer still lived after reading, the contents supposedly so frightening and terrible, they were driven mad with the knowledge. The book was expensive.

After reading the book cover to cover (in secret, a page here, a paragraph here. It was hard hiding the strange tome from the alert noses of his parents), Oleander realized the truth of the book seller's words. The knowledge was great and terrible. He no longer looked around his home content with what he saw. This place, these people, were too small. Their minds were not as expanded as his, they did not know what he did, their focus was too narrow.

Packing his things, Oleander disappeared. His first stop was back to the market. He tried to convince the seller to tell him of others who read the book, he wanted desperately to meet those of a like mind. But the seller held the list in confidence. Discrete words around the market divulged that none of a rational mind would touch the sprite-cursed book.

Failing there, but determined to find a companion, he opted to make a companion. Should a seller not know his wares? He returned to the book seller and cornered the fellow, laying him out with a powerful contuse. When the seller roused again, now tied tight, Oleander began reading aloud from the book to his captive audience, stopping only to take sips of water as his throat dried out. Alas, the book seller's mind wasn't strong enough to handle the information in the tome. Oleander left the corpse and his home territory, venturing out into the world at large.

The Path to Kith Clan
A commodity appears at first sight an extremely obvious, trivial thing. But its analysis brings out that it is a very strange thing, abounding in metaphysical subtleties and theological niceties."
~ Karl Marx ~

Throughout his travels he has grown more cunning, no doubt thanks to the dark energies and powers of the various forbidden books he's read which powers have expanded his limits beyond those of an average tundra. Oleander spent some time in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye where he read though a number of volumes before the inhabitants grew wise to him and forced him from the territory, their awe of his learning and their fear of what he learned at equal odds.

He forged alliances of blood with several tribes in Plague, using his knowledge of magic to make their enemies disappear by one means or another. He is rumored to have been seen in Wind, near the eye of the storm. Other rumors put him in Fire on the peninsula just north-east of Ice.

All the rumors could be true, to an extent. Though very much rooted in the arcane, Oleander prides himself not on spells (well, not fully on works of pure magic), but on toxins. His powerful toxins combine a touch of magic with essential oils of dangerous plants. Foremost in the arsenal is a potent hallucinogenic. His other specialties are poisons that mimic illnesses, subjecting the victim to a wild array of ever changing symptoms as the poison burns them from the inside. The lucky die. The unlucky are in agony for the remainder of their lives.

Given his area of interest, Nature was a likely spot to stop. He smooth talked his way in, offering his services as an ambassador of Arcane. His family name stood up to any checking (though he requested his folks not be contacted due to a personal matter he had yet to resolve with them), and the lost child of the far away clan leader was welcomed. There was no reason to doubt his stories about his travels and his mind was sharp for the diplomatic work. His early tutelage withstood the social pressures for someone of his station, and overall his integration into Kith Clan went smoothly. Mostly.

Chicoreus, the clan seer, saw through Oleander. When confronted, Oleander refused to leave of his own will, and with no evidence of malicious intent or past ills (ah, the tundra was a careful fiend!), Chicoreus could not force him out. The two made a bargain. They would play a game of dice, and chance would decide the victor.

This went about as well as a game of chance between a seer and a mage could go. Magicking the dice was forbidden, but if someone should happen to bump the table during someone else's roll? Oops! Or a failed table bump because the table was suddenly held in place, solid as stone? How did that happen! And so on and thus went the game, just short of actual physical violence.

At the conclusion, the points tallied to a tie. Oleander was permitted to stay, full well knowing the Seer would be watching. He was actually looking forward to the challenge.
