"The more a diamond is cut, the brighter it sparkles - the greater its beauty," and he meant every word.

Veluthil had an affinity for all things shiny. As soon as she was able, she left the comforts of the Starfall Isle in search of rare gemstones and beautiful jewels with an unmatched fierceness about her. She allowed nothing to stand in her way of what she wanted or where she wanted to go and from this drive she was shaped into a formidable fighter - a survivor.

What was supposed to be a quick stop in the Scarred Wasteland, turned into a temporary residence when she bore two hatchlings with a dragon in which she held no regard - and a Pearlcatcher, no less! The thought of the entire experience brought nothing but anger to her, so she fled north in the night while her then-mate slept. She made her way through the vast expanses of the Dragonhome, planning to stop only briefly within the Viridian Labyrinth, but she instead found herself a sanctuary in the tangled roots.

She remained reserved for quite some time, offering her knowledge only when prompted. It wasn't until Zuri joined the clan that she began to open up to those around her and accept their friendships. His outgoing personality brought out the good in her, and the devotion they shared towards one another could not be mistaken. The two dragons soon took a hatchling under their wings by the name of Rosinca, a little Nocturne (so aptly named) who delighted in Vel's collection of shiny jewels.

Finding herself with extra time, she devoted herself to training those who were destined to leave in pursuit of Glademother. It was a good outlet for her to relieve her many disappointments, regrets, and angers of the past.

An Unworthy Egg

Veluthil watched excitedly as the four eggs began to crack and fall apart, tiny hatchlings clawing vigorously from within the shells in their attempts to escape their confinements. Two of them managed to poke their heads out in just the same moment, causing their mother to chuckle lightheartedly. She nudged each of their faces against her own, a silent push for them to continue with their quest. The third hatchling had managed to create a tiny crevice in its shell, but couldn't quite seem to figure out how to peel the rest of it away.

Veluthil patiently waited.

The fourth egg burst open abruptly and a dragon as blue as the sky on a warm summer day sat proudly amidst her rubble. A small bit of shell stuck to the top of her head resembling a woody hat, and her mother delighted in it.

"Ah, Aiki," she murmured as she peeled away the tiny makeshift hat, "You must have the Keeper's calling with an entrance such as that."

She smiled as the first two hatchlings stumbled out of their eggs, immediately romping and rolling together amidst the plush pile of nesting leaves. The two were quite a pair, but Veluthil wasn't quite sure what to name them. She pondered it for some time, seemingly losing track of the third egg which was still struggling in its reveal.

"You look like an Umber, but you," she peered down at a strong, male Imperial, "I don't think you are mine to name. Your next family can have that honor."

Snap.

The sound of false hope. The mother turned her attention to her third egg, but there was no sign of a dragon. She shook her head with sorrow and decided to focus on something else for the time being. She groomed and fed her three champions, making sure each one got an equal share of the meal, but there was still no sign of the third egg hatching. The feeding came and went, as did a myriad of emotions.

Was the hatchling going to survive? Was it weak? Did it need her help? What was taking it so long? When was it going to figure out how to crack the shell? Gladekeeper would be ashamed of such a pathetic dragon.

Hours passed by and the sun peeked over the horizon. Only then did Veluthil catch her first glimpse of the final babe. The hair on her neck rose and her face contorted into a scowl as a female Imperial broke free of her imprisonment. The hatchling was much bigger than her siblings, yet she had struggled to accomplish the easiest of tasks.

"Medeni," she hissed as she stared it down. The tiny drake closely resembled her mother, traits which lead to further disappointment. Such a slow hatch. Disgraceful. The sight of her brought back memories of Vel's previous mate, her struggles, the inferior choices she had made. She had seen the hatchling for all of five minutes, yet she already loathed her, "You will amount to nothing."

The words were cold enough to chill the room.

She scooped up Aiki, Umber, and the unnamed boy with one of her giant wings, gently rolling them down the length of it until they nestled quietly in a pile on her backside. Medeni, however, was left alone in the nest with a gloom that would haunt her for a long time.

Her mother hadn't even bothered to feed her.
