HELLEBORUS
Insect catcher fierce ~ distractible ~ self-centered
Helleborus 'hunts' insects to support his clansmates' rapacious appetites. Mostly, he's out there with a shiny net getting distracted by butterflies the same color as his feathers and pretty rocks in clear pools of water. He arrives back to the clan after a gathering trip like some kind of great knight carrying a single sparkly jar of all his catch, completely oblivious to the eyerolls of some of his peers. In the past, he has tried to sew shiny bugs and pretty colored butterflies to his apparel. He thought it would make him look as pretty as those bugs (but it did not work!)
When the other gatherers 'forget' to remind him of an upcoming trip, Helleborus can typically be found helping out with the hatchlings. He’s wonderful at telling stories and playing with them while trying to make himself sound like the best insect hunter out there. He definitely dresses to both cause' fear' and impress like some kind of knight in shining armor.
“No, no! The adventures first, explanations take such a dreadful time.”
– The Gryphon, Alice in Wonderland
He is named after the hellebores, many of which are poisonous. The scientific name Helleborus derives from the ancient greek word ἑλλέβορος (helléboros), the name for H. orientalis, constructed from ἑλεῖν (heleîn), meaning "to injure", and βορά (borá), meaning "food". In mythology, hellebore was used to cure madness.
