Zyr was originally part of Thorne's mirror pack, and when the Mirror Brothers were still around, she was that annoying younger sibling who was always tagging along everywhere, constantly getting underfoot, and never really being allowed to be part of things. Even after they left, nothing really changed—she was still always overshadowed, never quite enough, always on the outside looking in. The experience soured her, making her irritable, bitter, and seethingly jealous of any member of the pack who had Thorne’s favor and attention, in particular Lynfa, who was just so cute and perky, and so completely unlike her. Zyr used to entertain all sorts of fantasies—killing Lynfa or just getting her to disappear, doing something amazing and heroic—but she lost the heart for it after a while, instead settling into a snappish apathy. She was a perfectly competent hunter, but Thorne expects no less from her mirrors, and therefore Zyr only really got her attention when she’d made a mistake or was acting up in some way. Things got better for Zyr after she struck up an acquaintance with the coli fighter Taiissa, a master of straight talk who wouldn't put up with Zyr’s sulky complaints about being ignored or looked down upon, instead turning the conversation inexorably toward a more honest, open, positive view of things. Zyr admired Taiissa almost in spite herself, and was half-heartedly toying with the idea of becoming a coli fighter as well. But then Taiissa's daughter, Joyous, who was still little more than a hatchling at the time, said something about how Zyr should become her own dragon, and Zyr had the sudden brainstorm to transform herself completely—to separate herself from her old mirror life by becoming something entirely different. It just so happened that Zedania had recently acquired a copy of the bogsneak mutagen papers, and when Zyr heard about it, she jumped at the chance to volunteer as an experiment. Despite some qualms, Zedania went ahead with the brewing, and once the goo had cleared, Zyr was, in fact, a bogsneak. Even her hide and wing patterning had changed. As a bogsneak, the newly renamed Zyrah couldn't be happier. She vastly enjoyed shocking the fewments out of her former pack members with her change and soaked up the amazed and astonished attention from the rest of the clan. The marshes and swampy forests near the lair became fascinating places to lurk and explore and to practice her new ambush style of hunting. For a little while, once the novelty wore off, she felt very lonely, missing the constant company of the pack, but Merry and Khazrakh still spend time with her, and the three have devised a teamwork hunting system in which the two mirrors chase prey toward Zyrah's hiding place in the waters. She maintains her friendship with Taiissa, and has struck up a much broader range of acquaintances among the other dragons in the clan, in particular with Cinder, Salamanda, Thea, and Fierce, who is also a former member of the mirror pack and can relate to her experiences. She may be a strange alchemical mutation, but she has no regrets whatsoever. Facts – Did a little time in the coli as a mirror, but never seriously. – Heights make her uneasy—she’s not quite acrophobic, but she definitely prefers to be on the ground. Becoming flightless was no great loss for her. – Is still hungry for affection and can be a bit pushy about asserting her presence; sometimes Taiissa or someone else has to rein her in. Fictions — Familiar When she changed, she also released her previous familiar, a sullen basilisk, and acquired a greater sandstrike, which she named Tickles. She also has a bird that's not a familiar, but rather a sort of semi-tamed pet; she likes to call him "Lunch."
