One would think that with a name like Winter and a dragon with the same colors of sleek sheets of ice, that she would be the most aloof person that someone could be unfortunate enough to run into. But if that is what strangers assumed about her they couldn’t be more wrong, even though she is truly a devout ice dragon to her core there is an unexpected warmness to her that at times not even her fellow flight members can understand. She had been born and raised in the Cloudscrape Crags even despite its rough terrain, and her mother’s warrior influence kept her strong even through the roughest storms. Even with the harsh beginnings however she was still a kind person, Winter refused to give up in seeing the good in others even if she was thought to be naive and childish for it; she would never turn away a dragon in need.

She’d always had a habit of welcoming lost dragons into her home clan’s lair and taking care of them for awhile, they were almost always lost travelers who had nowhere to go and no one to rely on. She got used to hearing their stories before saying goodbye to them and hoping they would be okay, but one day she grew tired of hearing their stories of abandonment with nothing she could do for them; and put preparation into finding a lair for a new clan, her own clan. In truth it had been another wanderer by the name of Solstice that convinced her to start this sanctuary for hurt, sick, and lost dragons. He even planned to stay and help her set it up as best he could, assisting with finding a lair for everyone to live in and keeping Winter, and himself alive through the process of making a hospitable refuge.

The process was a bigger undertaking than she expected, after all she had been a botanist, herbal witch, and healer practically her entire life! She could tell anyone every species of plant that grows in the Southern Icefield and its purpose, but knew nothing about how to build a clan from the ground up and lead them to prosperity. So Winter stood by what she did know by continuing to lead dragons into the shelter that was her home with Solstice, and they left when their wounds and illness healed, the storms cleared, or maybe they’d just had their fill of food and warmth, but all were offered the opportunity to stay. It took time, patience, and a lot of learning, but her dream of having a haven for these poor lost souls eventually came true and she couldn’t be prouder of herself and her clan.

But each and every clan experiences hardships and Winter’s was no different, there were dragons that they rescued that ended up not surviving, and clan members disagreeing that lead to fighting; she honestly had no idea how to handle everything so early on. She was lucky to have made a nice support group for herself with Neuge as her best friend, Aether the wise fatherly figure, and always loyal Solstice, who she had admitted she had feelings for after all their time together. Looking back on it she knows she couldn’t have handled it all without them, especially when it came to Yue who had a terrible habit of unnerving her practically whenever they walked into the room. She’ll forever thank the Icewarden for Aether in particular and his advice on leading her dragons onto good lives, even when they gave her trouble the way Yue did.

Her life must’ve seemed perfect to an outsider looking in with a kind clan, loving mate, and healthy hatchlings that would go on to lead their own lives happily, until one year when the storms started getting worse. Solstice was a hunter and while he’d always been good at his job, she worried about him going out in the storms she could’ve sworn were worse than she’d ever seen before. But he insisted that he would be fine, and they really did need more food or else who knows what would become of them? He and the other hunters disappeared into what she would’ve easily called the worst storm of them all, and she waited by the entryway constantly for their return. Days passed, some of the hunters from the trip returned but others said that Solstice and a few others had gone on further in hopes of bringing back more than just scraps for food. Winter had always diligently burned incense and left offerings of food for the Icewarden, in order to ask him to watch over the hunters for their safety, and she began doing this even more than before.

But it was to no avail, the storms ended after weeks passed and Solstice was never found no matter how much they searched and how much she prayed. Winter retreated into her lair after his loss was simply accepted by everyone but herself, she didn’t deny the heavy possibility but still she wanted to believe maybe by some miracle, he was still out there. She stayed with her clan barely hanging on as their confident leader for years, but eventually she came to realize that she’d simply had enough. So long ago now making a clan that prided itself on helping others had been her dream, and she’d had the most perfect partner she could’ve ever asked for in order to build it. But after he was gone maybe nothing changed, maybe they still functioned normally but she simply could not recover here in the Southern Icefield; not when she still found herself near constantly looking for small spaces he could’ve fit himself into somehow or debating on how he could’ve survived.

Winter left the clan she’d worked so hard to build, and she placed it in the care of the dragons that she trusted most out of its members. She would miss them and they would feel the same for her, but they knew she would be better off elsewhere and though she was reluctant she knew they were right. After saying her goodbyes she took flight in order to find a new place to stay, though she didn’t look particularly hard; in truth she spent her flight mostly on autopilot while she roamed Sornieth alone. She’d barely noticed a thing until one day when she found herself in the Starfall Isles, witnessing a battle between a harsh clan and an innocent arcane one. The arcane dragons were holding their own but not nearly as well as they could’ve been, and barely pausing to think about it Winter simply acted and flew in to help heal some of their wounded guards.

It is possible they might have lost the battle without Winter, but at least they were able to hit back twice as hard with her and then celebrate their victory. She enjoyed her time with them but also found herself being brought away from the crowd in order to speak with the clan leader, it felt incredibly odd after giving up her own title to see another one now; especially when said leader reminded her of herself by offering the hero nocturne a place to stay. Maybe Ridley could tell that she seemed lost or perhaps it was simply a good guess, but for now Winter is enjoying her vacation of sorts in the land of the Arcanist. She works as a combat medic and plant gatherer, while also passing on any leadership wisdom she’s learned in her time should Ridley ever ask for help. Even as she settles into the strange world of arcane magic she will forever be an acolyte of the Icewarden, and offer all her prayers for safety and luck to the home she created across the sea. She hopes that they don’t worry about her too much, it would be wrong to call everything easy but she is alive and well and that is what matters most.
