Slate is fairly shy, usually around newcomers or visitors but he does sometimes get shy around those he knows if he feels uncomfortable or flustered.
He loves reading though and he often spends hours on end reading anything he can find, no matter how short or banal. The others can tell what part of a book he's on by how his crest reacts; happy parts make his feathers fan out, sad parts make them droop, exciting parts make them quiver and so on. He's often found curled up in his lair with a book or two or seven and some nice tea from the Spiral female Chai. One often has to actually touch him to get his attention when he's reading as he zones out and doesn't hear them. His reaction is usually a startled squeak and wide eyes as he looks to the one that broke into his reading time, but he holds no grudges and apologizes for zoning out. He has an absolutely huge collection of books and scrolls in his personal lair, thin paths winding through the stacks and shelves, but he knows where every one of them are. He sometimes lends his books and scrolls out to those that ask politely, though he tends to fret until they're safely returned. The only one he doesn't fret over is the female Bogsneak, Sinlarra, as he knows her love of books matches his own.
He adores bees, bordering on obsession, and is now the Clans resident beekeeper, his hives (also called skeps) producing what the Clan considers the best honey on Sornieth, but he's pretty humble about it even while taking the compliments. He can often be seen humming along with his bees as he harvests their honey.
The Coatl male Jomei hangs out with him and helps with his hives, the males mother is also an apiarist and he's been happy talking to him about her hives and methods of keeping her bees.
When the Clan brought in the Aether dragons he quickly stored all the books he isn't currently reading as he's heard they like eating books! He can't have that, his books are special to him and he must protect them at all costs.
