"I've been a wild rover for many's the year,
And I spend all my money on whiskey and beer,
And now I'm returning with gold in great store,
And I never will play the wild rover no more. "

Hel is a former mercenary, part of a group that was captained by Pendranox. Although the group has disbanded, some members of it chose to settle in the unnamed clan with their captain, and Hel is one of them. She followed Pendranox into battles for years, after all, and came out of them alive and paid. In her mind, the captain never steered them wrong yet, and she has no reason to believe she's started now. She's certainly found plenty of work within her clan. She'd have been bored in a clan dedicated to living a peaceful life, but there's never a dull moment in this one, where someone's always needed for some covert work. Hel often worked as a scout in her old mercenary company and she's happy to do the same for her new clan, whom she sometimes forgets and refers to as her new company instead. Although the clan has plenty of dragons who are good at spying, listening for whispered secrets or seeking hidden documents, few of them have the extensive battle experience Hel has. She's good for when they expect a clan might be secretly militarizing, since she knows where to look for hidden weapons caches or secret training grounds, and she knows the difference between visitors from other clans coming to stay, and disguised mercenaries being gathered. She's also no mean fighter, and more than willing to put those particular skills to good use alongside her clan. The clan doesn't get into open battles very often, although small skirmishes are more common. Not fighting every day for her keep feels downright luxurious to Hel, who often compares it to being on vacation. She still enjoys a chance to exercise those skills though, whether she's defending their own territory, or fighting off a threat to the entire region. She enjoys things that are simple and direct, much like her attitude. When it comes to food, she'll take quantity over quality, and she has a distinct preference for large chunks of spit-roasted meat over carefully prepared delicacies. She likes a fast paced game of chance, with plenty of thrown dice and opportunity to cheat, but has little patience for anything involving strategy. She likes any chance for a fight or show of strength, preferring to work out even small disagreements with a bout of wrestling or a contest involving nothing more complicated than brute strength. The only thing she shows no preference for is alcohol, of which she'll take any type and any amount. She has an incredibly strong tolerance for it, able to drink even those larger than her under the table. She loves challenging anyone who will take her up on it to a drinking contest. Even when she loses, she still wins in that she has a chance to get roaring drunk and maybe smash a table or two when she falls over. Often coming off as brash and unpolished, Hel never had to develop her manners or refinement much as a mercenary, just her fighting skills, and it shows. She's quick to suggest anything be settled with a fight, takes what she wants as soon as she sees it, and her table manners are atrocious. However, she does have a firmly ingrained respect for rank, continuing to refer to Pendranox as “captain” despite the Imperial's protests that she no longer holds that position. This respect carries over to authorities within the clan as well, particularly their leader, Jeanne. Nearly everyone else she treats with cheerful disregard, if not inappropriate familiarity. She generally makes her friendly feelings known with a staggering slap on the back and an invitation to go raid the nearest beastclan village, making a relationship with her something that's not for the faint of heart. But those who don't stand on ceremony, who can fight, drink, and fight some more alongside her, find her good company. She's especially good friends with Gehanna, who enjoys a good drink and a good game of dice as much as she does. She considers the fights the nocturne brings her, when she flees straight to Hel with the gamblers she's just cheated hot on her tail, to be just another benefit of their friendship. ~by Mirrorstone |
