Petal helps Dagenhart train young dragons.
~Art by Codeine (#65468)~
Once upon a time, there was a queen that lived in a high, stone tower. She had been there for as long as she could remember, for the king had had her put there for fear of losing her someday. There she stayed, never questioning why she could not leave.
Even though she did not question, she still longed. The queen wanted a child, one that could keep her company in this tower of cold, unspeaking stone. She wept for this reason, and one day, a single tear slipped from her window and fell onto a dying flower below.
The flower, though small and shriveled it was, felt the tear rolling onto its last remaining petal. It's time was up, it knew; but before it died, perhaps it could grant a pitiful soul a wish. The wish that had been thought about so hard that it had been engraved into the tear's very being.
The small, light pink petal broke off and was rushed away by the wind, blown and scattered about with the tear still cupped carefully on it. When the fierce gust finally stopped, the petal was on the windowsill of the queen's window.
Here it began to shift and change, the tear expanding, stretching itself up into an elegant oval shape. The petal that had carried this little thing so far transformed as well, growing and cloaking the newborn egg in its soft pink depths.
It was only a few minutes before the queen came back to weep once more. She stepped lightly into the room, her face slowly contorting as she closed the door. Just as she was about to begin yet another round of weeping, she stopped. And picked up the egg.
The egg was never neglected, always kept warm, dry and safe, never leaving the watchful eye of the queen-- the future mother.
One fateful day, the egg suddenly tipped. It rolled around, astonishing the queen, and fell promptly onto the floor, where the egg cracked and burst into pieces.
Astonished, terrified, and just a bit hopeful, the queen knelt down and carefully lifted a particularly large piece off of something wriggling, to find...
A serene-looking pink hatchling underneath, it's bright pink eyes blinking sleepily.
