Biography
CORINNE the Pale Dancer
When Morning Comes, You Shall Catch My Soul
“Hush, hush now.” Silk rustled over stone as she stepped towards the soldier struggling for life on the floor. She knelt next to him, haloed by the light of the pale moon, and ran a lacquered fingernail across the rough metal of his breastplate. “Kpff.. Corinne..” Her mother’s lieutenant coughed and sputtered, clawing his throat bloody as his body spasmed in its death throes. Purple tendrils spread up from his chest, crawling and writhing beneath his skin as the living poison worked its way through his bloodstream. Corinne leant over him, her shawl settling like low mist around her. “Sorry, love,” she smiled. “You were in the way.” He spat blood-flecked foam. “Traitorous b—” Shhh.” She placed a finger over his lips. “Don’t speak. Just die.” She kissed him, long and lingering, her silks brushing against his body. Inhaling deeply, she could taste the life leaving his breath. But he refused to make this easy for her. Drifting a hand above his face, she invoked her power. His frenzied panic poured into her, biting and kicking inside her chest, battling against her influence. It was more work than she anticipated to calm the spirit still left in him, but after a long moment of struggling for control, her mind won the duel. Settling his frantic thoughts of survival with cold calm, she held on until she felt the last trace of life fade into stillness. Known as the Pale Dancer, Corinne is the daughter of Morvale Wehrleader Lanthanum. Draped in ghostly pale silks and silver gowns, she haunts the camps of her mother’s Wehr, spinning stories and playing harp. Lovely and beautiful as she is cold and haughty, she has the run of the Morvale lands; her mother will deny her no request. Often seen as the “softer” of Lanthanum’s two daughters, Corinne is quieter and more collected than her aggressive sister, the blood mage Morwyn. Because her talents are less obvious than her sister’s, Corinne was frequently overlooked as a child, viewed as fragile and weak. Her mother seemed to favour Morwyn, whose blood magic was obvious and powerful from the start. But Corinne realised quickly that to be underestimated is to have the advantage; when her powers did reveal themselves, she worked hard to conceal them from the rest of the Morvales. Corinne’s magic is much more subtle than her sister’s, but it is just as deadly. Able to influence the emotions and thoughts of those around her, Corinne has developed subterfuge into an art form. She manipulates others into action, directing their decisions without them ever realizing what guided them down that path. Discontent with playing second fiddle to her sister’s orchestra, Corinne plots her vengeance from the shadows, her long con of loyalty to her mother’s name and her sister’s inheritance finally about to show it’s hand. Corinne’s hatred will not be tempered until she claims the world for herself. |
