OKEANOS

Bitter, cold air would nip at his skin, the sound of the waves gently lapping against wood, the motions rocking the boat gently to and fro in the icy water almost calming, in a way. Small puffs of air escaped from his maw, visible in wisps that dispersed into the frost-bitten wind. Okeanos did not care to feel his feet upon the ground, choosing instead to live a life almost exclusively out to sea, the harsh, deep blue waters a familiar and comforting sight to him. He, by trade, was a fisherman, able to tame and understand the most volatile of environments in order to bring about the best haul one can imagine, an untouched goldmine by those who were too lazy or cowardly to even brave the stinging, freezing cold. Fish decorated in shimmering icy crystals and coloured as pale as snow, mussels and oysters by the dozen all strung together in masses at the bottom of algae-ridden nets. Sailing back and forth between ports to do business with traders in their respective domains, Okeanos made a fine living, one that he was proud of. It was when he docked in the domain of light that he found his world suddenly turned upside down, a series of events that would unfold to which he could have never truly predicted or, perhaps, back in his extreme nomadic mindset, even wanted. He had docked at a city of sorts, fanciful, sure, nice enough, but he was here to do business. Hunks of fish preserved in ice so cold it would never melt - at least, not for a long, long time - were stood on the deck of his boat, a viking-esque looking vessel complete with encrusted crowns of ice upon the frame and the bow, barnacles coating the entire lower half that lay beneath the sea line, peeking out into the outside world every so often as a wave would buffet the boat upwards over the crest. Confused dragons wondered why he was, indeed, at their dock, as his cruise seemed too different to theirs, pale oak wood with silky white sails, until he explained what he was there to do. It was there in the line that he saw her, shimmering blue scales as bright and vibrant as the sky. Galene, how precious that name may sound. No one could ignore the looks they gave each other that day and, of course, it was no surprise that after a long elapse of time had passed since anyone had last seen the icy pearlcatcher, Galene was the first to bound towards the docks the moment she saw his boat approaching from the horizon. Okeanos is, very much at heart, still a nomad. He would rather be free and not be tied down to a lair, barely moving and stuck in the same time for days, months, years, but he does not find the repeated visits hypocritical to his views. His newfound admirer had even managed to get him to step off his boat and onto the land, giving him an exclusive tour of the city. Whilst he is out at sea his thoughts trail back to her, when he can next see her again, and always does he anticipate the day when he can hold her once more. Sometimes she comes with him on his travels, and they spend the nights in laughter and love. Whilst Aurelia may not be his local haunt it is, in some regards, his home. But a home is not a prison, and with Galene by his side and the wind at his back, Okeanos' world just got a whole lot bigger. |
