Biography
Lydia
Arachonologist/Spider Caretaker
Arachonologist/Spider Caretaker
SPIDERS!
So the food should come in during the next few days, but they’ll need your signature because of the amount and…” The messenger – a skydancer - paused, eyes growing wide as he fixated on Lydia’s shoulder. The green nocturne smiled innocently back at him. “And?”
“Uh, ma’am, there is something on your shoulder…”
Lydia’s head swiveled around, coming face-to face with a large spider. It was black, fuzzy, and somewhat cute – most likely some kind of tarantula. Its right front leg lifted up in the air, almost as if it was waving. “Oh, this is Steve! Say hello, Steve. He’s friendly, don’t worry! He’s the biggest of his family. I’m so proud of him! Taking care of them is so much fun. Did you know that…” She went on for several minutes, listing off various facts about her arachnoid companions. The messenger, however, seemed uninterested in her vast array of knowledge.
“F-family? Them?”
“Oh yes. I keep lots of spiders here for study purposes. Aww, look! Elizabeth likes you!”
The messenger nearly jumped all the way to the ceiling as a slightly smaller spider began crawling up his tail. The poor creature was sent flying across the room, but was saved from damage by Lydia’s outstretched claws. It crawled up the nocturne’s arm to hide behind her neck and sulk. Lydia scowled at the skydancer, who was hightailing it for the entrance of the cave.
Lydia blocked his path. How she got to the entrance so fast, the messenger did not know. Soon it became clear, however. A third set of legs, previously tucked away against her sides, moved her body swiftly across the floor. More and more spiders appeared – under her wings, around her legs, from every corner. The nocturne grinned at him in a much more sinister fashion than before. “You hurt her feelings. Why would you be so rude?”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry! Look, just sign for the packages when they come, okay?!” He took to the air and was gone.
Tucking her extra legs against her body again, she retreated to the back of the cave. Similar to her pets, she preferred dark, quiet places. Back in her cave she was free to study her favorite animals without any distractions. Since adolescence, she had been fascinated with the small creatures and eventually took them on as her official field of research. Her unique mutation made her feel as though she had a special connection to them, more than any of the other scientists she knew. She really didn’t understand why so many dragons were frightened of the adorable little animals. Such a shame about the messenger – but there would be more. Besides, she had sent a friend home with him as an apology, so everything would be fine.
The messenger, having finally arrived home, gave a sigh of relief. He would have his route changed in the morning. No offense to Lydia or whatever her name was, but he just couldn’t stand anything with more than four legs.
He didn’t notice the tiny spider quietly building a web behind his feathers.

Didn't think it was possible to make a spider even worse? Nature has been severely underestimated.
Diving Aranea
To some, true terror is a spider that can swim.
