About
Albatraoz was one of the two coatl hatchlings created by his mother, Marina, in her genetic egg-splicing experiments. There were other eggs created, but they did not survive. He is very bony, has poor eyesight, and is not able to wield magic effectively, be it Plague or Nature. A weak and sickly coatl, he and Marina were banished to the lowest caste of the Coatl Clan, where she raised him alone. Due to his mixed elemental alignment, he has green eyes flecked with red instead of the standard rust-red eyes typical in the Coatl Clan. Because of his eye color, he was seen as an abomination by other Coatl Clan members. Oblivious to this, Albatraoz is generally optimistic. Many find Albatraoz's behavior to be bizarre. His attention rarely lingers on a single dragon or thing for longer than a few minutes (his various collections excepted). He is fiercely competitive, and when he becomes absorbed in a task his behavior can become wild and erratic. He is constantly muttering incoherently to himself.

As a result of his pariah status, Albatraoz and his mother lived in relative isolation until her death. One of the seafood gatherers, he spent his days harvesting food for the clan. This task also gave him ample opportunities to find bones and other items to add to his hoard.

In the first days of Mercury's takeover of the Wyrmwound Grottoes, Mercury found herself in a dispute with Nova regarding the clan’s stockpile of resources. Irritated that Nova did not simply follow her directions she spontaneously appointed Albatraoz (who happened to walk past at that moment) to handle the clan's hoard, in order to assert her dominance as the clan's leader. When supplies run low, he reports to Nova and goes out in search of replacements. Nowadays, Albatraoz is in close contact with the team excavating older parts of the Grottoes. He is ready to claim whatever interesting bits and pieces of items the teams find.

Albatraoz is known for his protective and possessive nature towards not only his own collection, but the clan's assets as well. He has a particular affinity for bones, possibly since many of his own tend to peek out from under his skin in a most unnatural manner. These collected bones came from scraps of his clanmates’ finished meals, picked clean. Since he was young he has collected them, amassing a hoard currently situated in the depths of the clan vaults where he resides. He occasionally fashions them into decorations or tools.
Albatraoz met Lori when she eroded a stone wall separating his hoard room and the outer caves. She initially tried to rob the hoard, but when Albatraoz stumbled upon her she stopped. After a terse discussion, she offered him one of her precious nickel cat figurines, and he took it as a show of good faith. He kept her hidden until inadvertently bringing her up in a conversation with Nova. Nova decided that Mercury would need to decide Lori’s punishment.

In Lori’s interrogation, she gave Mercury an explanation about how she penetrated the lair. After learning that Lori was a master of rune magic, Mercury decided to keep Lori on at the Grottoes, assigning her to fortify all of the Grottoes’ borders with protective runes. Albatraoz was assigned to keep a watch over Lori while she inscribed the runes; he had picked up a bit of his mother’s magical talents and was somewhat able to read the runes. He knew enough to know whether or not Lori was inscribing the proper runes. During her time inscribing new protective and non-erosive runes on the Grottoes’ walls, she grew fond of Albatraoz and the clan, eventually joining as a permanent member and becoming the treasurer.


Trivia
  • Albatraoz is able to see David’s true form through the veil of magic covering his undead body.
  • He takes care of a pit of shattered serpents, which he found in an unused section of the Wyrmwound Grottoes.
  • Before Mercury took over the Wyrmwound Grottoes, Albatraoz would stash his collectables in an abandoned room near [somewhere]. Over the years the piles of items grew to fill the room. He’s fashioned a pile of soft things for himself in the corner of the room and since taking charge of the clan’s hoard he has moved into the space permanently.
