Crepe Myrtle was the captain of the guard for Princess Menthe of the Sunbeam Ruins.
The key word being was. Now she's still her loyal knight, duty-bound to protect the imperial, just with slightly different official duties now that the princess ran away from home, assisted by her two personal guards who had sworn on their honor never to do anything like that. ...there's a reason she doesn't live anywhere near the Sunbeam Ruins anymore. Although, Myrtle would say, it all hinges on a technicality, doesn't it? Technically she'd sworn to serve the princess, not the stuffy old philosophers who kept her locked up in an aging castle as a trophy. And when the princess had insisted that it was in her best interests to leave their home, Myrtle fulfilled that duty in spades. Technically, she's in the right. She acts cavalier about it - as she does everything - but those that dig a bit deeper discover that Myrtle is bothered by her new branding as a traitor, as her job was (and still is) important to her. But most dragons don't bother to dig deeper, taking the womanizing flirt as Myrtle's true personality. She doesn't give them much of a chance to, glossing over any potential leads with lighthearted jabs and showboating. It's just as well. It's exhausting for Myrtle to talk about feelings. She'd much rather do something more active. Nothing like a little fighting to forget how painfully earnest your emotions are and how easily that could be taken advantage of, right? Far better to cover that with a veneer of flirting and chivalry than to make yourself vulnerable like that. But, if Myrtle is being completely honest with herself, her feelings are strong, and probably very obvious. And she does consistently try to do what's right, even when it's complicated, despite how many airs she puts on that life is all a fun fantasy novel with no grey areas. (And maybe, if Myrtle is completely honest with herself, she feels more than a little lost and confused with the new direction her life has taken. She'd never begrudge Menthe the right to leave their former clan, but... she had a purpose before. Without that, what does she have left? Who is she, really?) |
