Deepbalm
Guardian of the Wounded
Battlefield Medic & Grief Counselor "Tell me your troubles." Deepbalm has been with the Oakrest clan for as long as anyone can remember. He came while he was a young dragon and found his place immediately as a physician. His Charge is the health and well-being of the dragons he knows, and he takes it very seriously. While the clan didn't require a dragon of excellent caliber as a physician when they lived out on the Shattered Plain, things started to become more pressing when they moved to Greatwyrm's Breach. Deepbalm adapted. He learned what he could from old texts and experimentation, from working with Murphy and careful observation of the longnecks in the area to learn what herbs held the potential for healing the sick and aid in rapid recovery. And while Deepbalm is good at healing the sick and wounded, he discovered his calling is to serve as a counselor for dragons who had suffered loss, grievous wounds, or other trauma. And trauma was soon found in Oakrest. When the tunnels into Cairnstone were opened, Deepbalm sincerely came into his own. He treated the wounded who made their way back to the clan, but a bigger problem soon became evident. While the dragons of Oakrest were relatively healthy, they also couldn't always make it out of Oakrest safely or in time. Deepbalm took stock of his options, and he ultimately chose what made sense: He trained to ensure he could take his skills into Oakrest. Becoming a battle medic changed Deepbalm's perspective on his position in the clan and his life in general. He no longer had the luxury of staying safe within Oakrest's corridors. Being the only healer on staff, he wound up being the dragon to deploy in case someone was injured in the field or in the tunnels. And those whom he helped were not always fortunate enough to recover completely. Rikuto, a young wildclaw, was injured while visiting Oakrest's territory. Deepbalm did all he could for him at the time, but the wounds were too severe. He simply did not have the surgical skill to reattach tendons that had been damaged. Rikuto would never run again, though they both knew Deepbalm had done his best. Deepbalm is good friends with most of the dragons in Oakrest. He gets on famously with the medical staff, including Krystallos and Hosta. He is glad for other dragons to take over some of his duties, as it allows him to dedicate all of his time to perfecting his skills as a battle medic. He does not avoid confrontation with others, but he actively seeks resolution of problems. He firmly believes that all things - relationships with others included - should be left better than they were found. His heart belongs to a young guardian named Lirael. He enjoys her pleasant optimism and dedication to her crafts. They are a couple of no great remark among the clan, and their quiet fondness of each other is neither epic nor noteworthy, especially compared to other, more passionate dragons. But they both enjoy the stability and firm-footedness of their relationship, and they look forward to raising many children together.
