it’s easy to get lost within the tangled wood. the corpses of trees cover the land like the skeletons of fallen giants, their bark bones obscuring any path that may once have been walked. through the dark of the ever-present fog they often appear as only great black shadows lurking in the gloom. in some places even the roots rise from the ground like gnarled grasping hands, ever reaching, but don’t be afraid. they can’t hurt you; they’re only husks.

if you press on through the bramble long enough, the trees might start to thin; and their roots might retreat back into the soil; and maybe even the darkness will start to lift, if only the slightest bit. it’s almost as if the forest is guiding you somewhere. but most don’t make it this far.

the further you go, the lighter it gets. eventually you notice things, small signs of life; prints in the leaf litter, talon marks on the trunks of trees. you might even stumble across a path or two, faint and barely worn, but there. maybe you follow one of them.

provided you pick the right path, you’ll end up in a small clearing where the conifers are frail and sparse, allowing moonlight to cut through the canopy, catching only in the thin blanket of fog. here it is overwhelmingly quiet; the pervading silence hangs in the air like a veil. there is a small encampment spread across the dell, made up of rickety lean-tos and canvas tents and snuffed campfires. despite the presence of life, this place is shrouded in stillness, like the eerie peace over a burial ground. the land here hides its history as its inhabitants hide theirs. but this is a story in progress, well past a prologue; there is more yet to be told.

beyond the trees and the encampment is a hill, at the base of which is the crumbling remains of an animal den. there is nothing special about it; no markers or decor, nothing aside from the faint talontracks in the dirt by the opening. given the state of it, you might think it was abandoned were it not for the warm glow of torchlight coming from the entrance.

here reside the final remnants of a mirror pack decimated by sickness and insurrection, survivors who crawled away to the deep hidden spaces within the woods to lick their wounds undisturbed. over time they found others who sought to do the same; travelers and orphans and misfits and outcasts all drawn into the same dark place to hide away and be safe. within the shadows they built a new pack, if an unorthodox one: a collective of the lonely, redefining home.
