Of Crown or Stars

A peninsula between the Starwood Strand, Tourmaline Archives, and Astrolodome serves as a crossroads for the paths of Arcanites. To be safe in the magic-infused Dome, to guide one's mind in the Archives, or to lose oneself in the radiant mysteries of the Starwood?
Likewise, the kingdom on the edge of this peninsula must also make its choice: whether to secure itself in the walls of the tried-and-true and live without the dangers of spontaneity, or to burst forward into the world with the reckless magnificence of a shooting star.
Some are more passionate about their stance than others.
And so here the road forks: The Kingdom of Murloss or The Starmaturgy. A fight between two worlds: constraint and freedom, witholding and giving, fear and hope.

The Kingdom of Murloss wasn't always at war with the more free-spirited sector of its governed. But since King Erloss's sudden death, his pragmatic Queen gave herself full control over the city, with a great interest in its exports and imports. Through what many suspect to have been bribery and threats, the Queen turned her late husband's land into a corporate state.
First it was the smog. The stars are what Arcanites are closest to; it is their way of resonating with the world. Complaints rose to the royal chambers that the foundries blotted out the sky and kept Murloss's people from connecting to the stars. A starless sky does not insipre knowledge or art. The Queen nodded approvingly at this. Now the people's gazes can focus soley on her.
Then it was the labor. To keep Murloss moving, The Queen said, they can't be wasting time on superficial hobbies, and must wisely spend time helping Murloss's wealth grow. This, in turn, helps their wealth grow.
(The Queen likes to use 'they' to refer to the people.)
With all the new economic expansions The Queen created, she needed workers. She plucked the writers, scholars, and artists of Murloss and placed them in her foundries. The more they resisted, the more she advocated for their 'relocation'.
They didn't cry out so much after spending days in the mines and mills.
Then it was the guards. The Queen enlisted the Royal Guard of maintaining a new curfew, overseeing transactions, determining which books were useful and which were not. Curriculums changed. Some books no longer printed. The people felt a shift in the kingdom's atmosphere, and not because of the pollution. Color began to drain out of the city.
The Queen noted this. They would learn, in time, that she only acted to keep them safe. To keep them from breaking the stable walls and amasses of wealth that made Murloss so powerful. She was doing them a grand favor. Them, and their offspring.
And as long as the people don't dare to raise their heads to the stars as they used to, then Murloss's Gilded Age can continue as long as the Queen wishes it to.
But not everyone falls under the will of the crown so easily. Though the smog of Murloss's new factories keeps the stars' gazes at bay, some dragons and Beastclan refuse to let their bonds to the cosmos be severed.
Secret notes and forbidden hymns. The stubborn, impassioned streaks of graffiti on royal walls. A faint soliloquy of an old thespian that fades away as soon as it comes. The shadow of a scholar's wings as she takes her students beyond the smokey clouds to map the constellations' journeys.
Some of the more emboldened creatures seek out others like them, sharing notes and ideas. Words travel in whispers and worker chants.
Dubbed the 'Starmaturgists' by the people and 'The Enemy' by the potentate, the artists of Murloss raise their heads and voices to the heavens once more.
