Following the harrowing fall from the castle sky, a waterlogged cardboard box with a lone dragon floated toward a forgotten area in the driftwood. Dirty, defeated, and alone, a soot-colored dragon looked toward the sky and named himself after his old home-Sunshine.



More dragons came. It was slow at first, but increased. Hatchlings were washed into the marketplace and sold like cattle. Sunshine found a mate- Rainbows. She was beautiful and graceful, with wings and body the color of the bogs. They took in the abandoned hatchlings and soothed their cries of anguish. They nursed them to health. Soon the hatchlings grew into giant, powerful dragons of power. They formed a ramshackle family, and took in any abandoned hatchling Rainbows found on the water, or any injured dragon Genji found while hunting. Like a Phoenix, Sunshine rose from the carcass of his box and found triumph in his victories.



Sunshine's eggs hatched, and we was filled with overwhelming joy. He sat himself upon his throne of rubble and watched his children frolic with Rainbows. Soot was the color of bubblegum, with wings like fire, and Shiny had an ashen complexion with blood-colored wings. Today was a great triumph for the Ash King.



The ramshackle Ash Kingdom began to rise. It wasn't much, just a palace made of driftwood, but it had spirit. Sunshine, Rainbows, and Genji made court, with Princess Shiny as heir to the throne. Obsidian became the jester, and entertained the whole palace with her jokes and pranks. A guard was formed, Shadows and Daylight attacking any who step out of line. The others filled the castle town with laughter and cheer, music and lights. Misbehavers, like Diana the Killer or Valentin the Miscreant, were put in the prison. The Ash King smiled down upon his kindgom, but his sights were set elsewhere...



Obsidian took a step too far one day. She injured Rhinestone, the archivist, while she was pulling a prank. She pleaded her case before the mighty Ash King. Sunshine looked down upon her with distaste. 'Please, almighty. Find it in your graces to forgive me,' Obsidian sobbed. 'I shan't end your life,' Sunshine began. 'But I must send you before ShadowBinder with your children to forever serve the shadow. You cannot remain here.' Obsidian sobbed, scratching and screeching, begging for forgiveness while she was dragged out of the throne room. Daylight took one shoulder, Shadow took the other, and they lifted her into the air, her wrappings fluttering behind her. The Ash King sighed. He saw no joy in dismissing Obsidian, but it had to be done.



A disease swept the small kingdom, falling many ill, including the Ash Queen. Sunshine put all the ill in a forgotten cave in Dreamer's Cove, and sought a cure. He swore he would not rest until his beloved was cured.
