xxThe Gilded Heightsxx

xxxCasting long, twisted shadows over Hewn City’s already darkened perimeter is an ancient city restored to its former glory. The Gilded Heights were once nothing more than rubble that predated the Third Age. But as the Lightweaver’s children expanded their society, they rebuilt these ruins into a bustling city in the image of what used to be.

xxxIvory towers jut up from the ground, creating a claustrophobic cluster of gothic artwork. Arches, carvings, statues, gargoyles of white marble, rose windows, gold inlays, stained glass, and draping banners of vibrant colors reflect the intense sunlight in all directions, producing a blinding cacophony of visual noise. The only break is an enormous central park called the Resplendent Circle. Caravans and local merchants gather there daily to sell their overpriced wares to the wealthy citizens.

xxxBeneath this circle, deep in the earth, is a sprawling tunnel system. Full of secret exits, dead ends, confusing loops, and questionable structural integrity, it is a hive for criminal activity. Like a dark reflection of the Resplendent Circle above, these tunnels are where mercenaries, smugglers, and thieves sell their goods and services.

xxxBut crime isn't only committed under the surface. While elected officials govern the city, a few influential families puppet the politicians from the shadows. The Vardali family in particular is one of the most feared and revered. Olwen Vardali, the patriarch of the family, is a retired physician whose fortune is maintained by investing in stocks and buyouts. Elowen Vardali, the matriarch of the family, is a museum and art gallery curator who is rarely seen in The Gilded Heights. She travels all across the world, supposedly to gather new exhibits.

xxxWhile the core of the Vardali family stays within the Gilded Heights, their connections span the entirety of Sornieth. The Scarlet Viper Assassin Coterie, the Emperor-worshiping death cult known as The Children of Tiamat, the Southern Icefield League of Bounty Hunters, the Leviathan Cartel, and the Blood Mage Coalition make up just a few of the Vardali family's illicit alliances.
