The Legend of the Monster King

Long ago, when the Third Age was new, the Shade settled into factions of flights in Sorienth, but none were so pungent in the dark being as the Arcane Flight.

The border between the Star Wood Strand and Focal Point was riddled with creatures of the Shade, the site of death and corruption for many Arcane Clans making the journey to the Observatory.

Eventually, the Arcanist had enough. He blessed a Guardian of his own flight, battle-scarred and twice the size and strength of any Imperial with the power to purge the Shade. But there was a catch.

All the land, all the dragons, everything he purged would be his Charge. When they would die or be lost to him, he would have to live with the fact that he failed a part of his Charge.

But the Guardian let the power of the Arcanist overtake and warp him, and he waged war upon the Shade.

Days turned to Weeks, weeks to months, months to years, but he would not stop destroying every scrap of Shade he could find. Eventually, the remaining Shade retreated into a cave within the Star Wood Strand, but the Guardian found them there and chased them away. The Guardian took a liking to this cave, although his enemy resided right outside, in the wood outside.

The Arcanist was pleased with the Guardian's efforts. To show his thanks, he reached into the moonlight and pulled out a Tundra to be his mate, to fight the Shade with. The Arcanist let his Guardian rest until he would one day need him again if the Shade became too great.

She was his fair Moon Queen, the center of his universe. He was the Monster King, the creature that other monstrosities feared.

Dragons set out to find this Monster King and his Moon Queen. Some out of curiosity, some to try and see if they could best the Arcanist's creation.

All perished before his deadly Arcane breath. Those he decided to keep were taught that they were his. He brought them up as his own warriors, loyal to him to the bitter end, never daring to step a toe out of line lest it meant their demise. He and his minions reside in their cave, waiting, watching for the Shade or wanderers to dare try to step foot onto their land.

The Legend of the Monster King is now a bedtime story to scare little hatchlings with.

"Don't get out of your nest or the Monster King may be waiting to take you away."
"If you don't eat your ants, the Monster King will come and eat you himself."

Although older dragons who have heard the story claim not to fear it, when they journey through the Star Wood Strand, they cannot help but feel a sense of unease...
