@nienna33 @Storey Carrots and Cake's one-egg nest has hatched, so we're moving forward with a little spiral lady named Nomad! Here's her adult scry! She's nothing I would ever pick out and buy for myself, but she does have a look going. The priamary and tert match pretty well. Not bad for breeding ugly parents. I'll send Carrots and Cake off to the Shadowbinder after the server migration, I'm just barely sliding this update in before the site shuts down! I think I'll take my time finding an ugly mate afterwards as well, and update when they're nesting to show the mate, like I did with Cake.

@nienna33 @Storey Lots of updates! -------- Nomad got a mate that came with the name Asra, and wow is he an ugly fellow. I don't know if I've harped enough on how very much I hate the color pink, but he is in the worst part of the pinky range. I do like the gene poison, but it can so easily muddy and muddle a dragon with just way too many clashy colors. His situation could have been worse, but the muddle of colors definitely contributed to my picking him. He does have a couple shades of almost matching blue that aren't horrible, but are a little too far into the "close but not quite" matching zone for my tastes. I can't stand when colors don't actually match but don't contrast either. I also really can't stand the gembond gene. Its too irregular - if there was a little more rhyme or reason to the gem placement, even a little bit of symetry, it could be great, but a random splatter of colorful crusty stuff is not what I find to be attractive. And finally! I really don't like male pearlcatchers because their chest anatomy is so glaringly atrocious. They have that random tumor in the front and a neck the swoops a little wrong? One day I will redline this to show why I hate it. Asra had also been around the block a few times - check out that offspring list. Poor retired fodder breeder that got the boot to the fodder AH, only to be scooped up for an ugly challenge. ^^;; ----- The pair had a nest of three that hatched this morning. Let's check out the kiddos! First, the spares: This is Smolder: I was pretty excited about that mulberry tert (how great would it be to somehow make it into the purple color range!) but his other colors ruined it for me. I'm not a big fan of reds and there's that horrible pink color on his wings. This is Parade: Parade really wasn't even a contender for me. While the multi color thing copper brought to the table is neat, the copper part of the equation isn't particularly attractive to me. Clay is, in my opinion, a terrible color and shale here isn't doing anything for her. I don't hate female PCs like the males, but I don't like them as much as spirals so that was a point against her compared to her siblings as well. --- And our keeper is Ash! The white is nice, taupe does a good job pretending to be a warm gray instead of a brown, and wine, while in a horrible part of the color wheel, is at least vaguely purpley. Ash's overall look is the most attractive of the three, so she gets to stay! Not much to complain about here, but still plenty to improve so we'll keep moving onward! I'll update again when Ash has a mate!

@smeen I've added you to the list!
The babies do keep getting better, but that still makes me nervous - every new ugly mate has such a huge chance of dragging things down. ^^;; I really made this a complete random chance situation.

@nienna33 @Storey @smeen Another ugly nest has hatched! But first: For Ash's mate, I found this tundra that came with the name Masato: I don't think I need to keep harping on how much I hate the color pink. I do actually sometimes like pink and green together when they are made to resemble some of my favorite fruits, but this boy looks nothing like fruit. These specific shades of pink and green, together, were popular "preppy girl" colors when I was growing up, so I particularly dislike them together. I didn't actually notice I'd managed to sneak capsule, one of my favorite genes in here. Its just so hard to notice on tundras, with all that fluff. And its red, a color I don't terribly care for either. Speaking of tundras, my least favorite breed finally made it in here! Their faces really creep me out. A little too uncanny valley. I think they could have been a really cool concept if executed differently, and I might have liked them if they had been, but with the unnerving derpy face they have now I absolutely cannot stand them. ---------------------- On to the nest! We had another 3 egg nest, so there was a nice array of options. I've been really lucking out with the spiral breed passing on - 2/3 of these kids were spirals! I was so worried I was going to be cursed to tundras from here on out. Let's go from worst to best this time. So worst is, of course, our little tundra kid, Memories. She got the short end of the stick in both breed and colors. Not a ton to say here that hasn't been said. I can't stand tundras, I'm not huge on metals unless the genes and color palette are built around that color, fun fact I don't at all like the color antique, and to top it off we have a nice clashy coral thylacine. This poor kid didn't get the memo that we're trying to breed the ugly out. --- Next up is, debatably, Sauerkraut. I'm honestly having a tough time deciding between Sauerkraut and her brother, who's coming up next. [s]Giving her such a cute name isn't helping.[/s] She has two colors I genuinely like, honeydew and white. I would love to get things moved to those parts of the color wheel, instead of being stuck in brown/pink/red land forever. Her tert is blush, which is unfortunate, but as you'll see in a minute, I'm stuck with pink no matter which spiral I choose so I'll just have to pick the lesser of the two evils there. I'm leaning away from keeping Sauerkraut only because her overall look is less appealing as a whole, but I'm going to think on it for the next couple days - after all, I have to wait for them to grow up to level and exalt the leftover siblings, so I have a little wiggle room to make my decision. --- The dragon that is, debatably, the best of the group is Grapefruit: He can be considered the best only because his overall look is the most apealing. He looks like a literal grapefruit - his skin is the rind and his wings are the flesh of the fruit, especially with that ripple gene adding a pulpy texture. I did just say I like things that look like fruit. But breaking him down to his composition, the only thing that I particularly like about him is the primary color, grapefruit. Its a fun color that tends to look nice, though its not one I get as excited about as the gray scale and green ranges that Sauerkraut has. The rose I, of course, hate and having it on his wings makes it a very prominent feature. The red thylacine isn't great on its own either, and is only getting a pass here because it matches nicely with the orange tones from grapefruit. ------ I have some thinking to do on these kids. Part of the reason I'm leaning towards Grapefruit is that it feels a little more in the spirit of this challenge to go for the overall aesthetic rather than a strategic choice - but on the other hand, choosing my heir is the only chance I get to put a little strategy into this otherwise completely random project. So I don't know who I'll choose! I'll update with the heir I've chosen and their mate in my next update! In the mean time, feel free to chime in with your opinion on which spiral I should go with to help me decide!

Next up is, debatably, Sauerkraut.

48213775_350.png

I'm honestly having a tough time deciding between Sauerkraut and her brother, who's coming up next. Giving her such a cute name isn't helping. She has two colors I genuinely like, honeydew and white. Well, I was all for Sauerkraut because Honeydew and Blush are super cute colors, but Grapefruit is such an amazing color too! I really think Sauerkraut has more aesthetically pleasing colors combinations... But grapefruit though.

I can never seem to keep up with replies to my challenge threads. ^^;; @lunasillusions @WillowtheWisp Sorry to take so long to get back to you, but I added you both to the pinglist! @nienna33 @Storey @smeen So here's the next update! ------------------- So I elected to keep Sauerkraut from my last nest. She really grew on me with the cute name. I got her a mate, who I named when I was feeling really pessimistic about his odds of pretty babies. ^^;; So here's Ruin: I can't stand his primary and secondary colors and don't like the way honeydew looks with them. Speckle isn't a bad gene, but a little lackluster to me - in most applications, I'd choose a different gene. Skink is a great gene, but here adds a random shade that doesn't match the existing color palette and really helps to drag him down. Circuit is one of my least favorite genes. I don't hate it terribly, I just don't tend to like it with much of anything. Even where it works (which is not here), I always prefer non-circuit dragons/scries to ones with circuit. Guardians are an okay breed. I like females, don't care as much for males, but they're pretty low on my priority list. I don't often dedicate lair space to them. --------------- And on to the nest! We had two eggs this time, and again will be doing worst to best. So first up is OhMy: So quick context on the names: my fiance named these for me. Apparently "OhMy" is because he looks like a tiger, so "Lions, tigers, and bears! Oh My!" was the inspiration. OhMy is very clashy. There's a lot of very different warm-range colors going on here and while I'm not wholly opposed to any of them, they don't work great together. Otherwise, not a completely horrible hatch considering the conditions, but nothing exciting. Our keeper is Spot: I don't know what to tell you about the name for this one. My fiance thinks its hilarious to name things generic pet names that don't match. Spot is named for his Geodude/Graveller/Golem of the same name. That's the best explanation I've got. Spot is actually...pretty nice looking? We've got two shades of brown that pretend to be greys (one off XYX actually? What are the odds!), and a shade of pink that pretends to be lavender (which complements the eyes nicely too?). Spot looks super cute as a hatchling. I'm almost tempted to stop here, but I'm not sure Spot looks nice enough that I'd pick him if I was acquiring him by some other, non-challenge-related means. So I should probably still continue.
