The most reaction Avery would get to the prodding was a slight wince when she hit the scar. It wasn't an ugly thing, thankfully - though the skin was still raised and pale white against Kassian's tanned complexion - but still had a tendency to ache when touched. Worse, it smarted when a storm was coming in.
"It doesn't hurt as much nowadays," the prince reassured, nodding softly along to Avery's musings about the group as a whole. Travel wasn't fun for anyone with their goals in mind. Zane was more than a little unprepared. "And yeah- he's getting as home-sick as the rest of us." He shuffled around to his other side in order to bury his face in Avery's shoulder. "Let's just hope some proper sleep sorts him out."
Reef had objections to the idea of a fish only diet. Sirens ate a variety of things. Seaweed, fish, eel- though the majority was seafood, other things could be patched in. A personal favorite of Reef's was coconuts that happened to fall just far enough off the tree to float in the ocean. A rarity, but one he tried to indulge as much as possible.
"Very pretty," the siren replied firmly, intertwining his hand with Sadie's the best he could. "As for... for action, can go back underwater." While he was still missing a few words here and there, Reef's English had gotten good enough to not warrant deciphering. "Water heavy but good. Try breathing through neck." He tapped his gills.
With a slight tug on the hand, Reef gestured for Sadie to try again to break the surface of the ocean. They wouldn't get much farther unless she did, and he didn't feel like climbing up the ladder onto the deck again quite yet.
(Ahh, the issue's mainly been my lack of a car, but hopefully i'll be able to fix it soon!! I have a potential job with fedex and my dad's promised to help me get there long enough to get a paycheck and repair the dang thing. my grandma's also pulling through! at least going to rehab, there's a small chance she may be able to come back home once she's done <3)

“I’m sure some sleep will all do us some good…. Now Sadie and Reef though, they’ll probably be miserable… although I do feel bad dragging the two of them around all the time, maybe all this love potion crap will wear off of the two of them… Sadie hasn’t really been around Sebastian much without Reef tagging along…” Avery muttered as she burrowed a little further underneath the blankets, the cool night air feeling a little crisp.
“I’ll be grateful to return home as well, I’m sure everyone’s parents will have a mouthful to say, with the exception of my mother…” The pirate grimaced slightly and ruffled her curly hair up and out of her way. “Your parents, along with Sebastian’s, are probably trying not to start a war at the moment, knowing how wonderfully they get along together.”
Submerging herself underneath the water scared Sadie senseless. Never had she ever felt so vulnerable, so claustrophobic in her entire life. It was an incredibly uncomfortable situation, forcing herself to practically be dunked underneath the water's surface. Reef’s firm hold of her hand was really the only thing that gave her enough courage to do so.
Breathing through her neck with the strange gills was more of an instinct, and it only took a few seconds before she seemed to relax slightly, after realizing that she’d be able to breathe just fine, without worrying about drowning. The pressure from the water was irritating though, but she wasn’t quite used to it yet.
Gesturing it the one webbed-hand, she tugged Reef towards whatever she thought would be food. Who knows what sirens ate, she didn’t care it was the middle of the night.
(Oh man cars are expensive…. I’m on the search for job number two man, because job number one doesn’t pay enough…. Tell me about living on a prayer… congrats on your grandmaaaa that’s awesomeee hope she has a full recovery!.)

Kassian nodded tiredly in response to Avery's musings on Sadie and Sebastian. The two had been separated for awhile now, and without ill-effects. Maybe it really was a potion, the princeling thought with a yawn, snuggling into Avery's side. His eyes felt heavy.
"I'll be happy for home, not the people in it." Kass said with a soft snort of amusement. "There's probably going to be a security measure to keep me from leaving the castle, at this point." He'd escaped more times than he could count now, with another prince and the girl he was arranged to marry in tow. Showing back up with an additional girl, a mercenary and a siren wasn't going to be a nice conversation.
Kass mumbled something else, most likely about how his parents couldn't arrange wars properly if they'd tried, but it faded along with his awareness. The boy was asleep before he could continue.
Reef hadn't been fully underwater, in his element, in over a week. Funny how you missed things that were previously second-nature. With an excited, muffled noise, he followed after Sadie's lead, allowing her to drag him in the direction of a moving shadow under the water.
It turned out to be a shark. Not large, unfortunately - Reef had always favored them larger than a juvenile - but it would do. He watched in quiet as Sadie inched up but didn't go further. For a moment, he wondered if she'd lost her nerve, but the siren realized she most likely didn't know how to hunt. It wasn't as if she'd been doing it since birth.
He gestured wildly, attempting to convey a biting and twisting motion all in one, before carefully releasing Sadie's hand. The lunge for the shark was a quick one - a tense, a dash and a bite - before a small plume of red colored the water. He turned to her with an excited, welcoming expression, spreading his arms at the large fish as if to say 'tada!'.
(oh goodness, i feel you!! and me too, i'm excited she'd okay :)
i also finally got that job with fedex! warehouse jobs make everything hurt but the pay is half-decent, so it evens itself out LMAO)

Avery opened her mouth to start another conversation, but promptly closed it when she realized she probably wouldn’t get much of an answer. Somehow she was tired, but not too tired. After laying still for awhile, her breathing evened out, and she was fast asleep within a few more minutes.
Sadie seemed to turn another pale shade of white. That was a shark. He just manhandled and killed a shark. How in the name of glow fish am I supposed to eat that?? I swear I think I might get salmonella. Heck no.
She shook her head hurriedly, clearly feeling mildly lightheaded. Maybe she should have had something to eat before she came down. The whole siren part of things was really messing the human side of her mind up. Trying to gesture some sort of sign, one that sort of meant “how am I supposed to eat that since it’s raw and gross?” She blinked a few times, trying to contemplate everything that had happened.
Wow. Never had she ever thought she was a siren. Sure, she didn’t mind being near the ocean, but she had always presumed herself as a pirate, and pirates like the water, it was their safe spot. The fact that Reef had even figured out whom and what she was, and that this little bond thing was an actual thing genuinely freaked her out a little.
(OUUUUUH that’s exciting oh man I applied for another job and I’m sure I’ll probably regret it but YOLO I need to make more money lol I ain’t doin too hot right now-)

Reef had never had experience with half-sirens. There were rumors, sure - members of the pods that ran away onto land to pursue human mates, as rare as it was - but he'd never seen one himself. Much less the result of a coupling like that.
Attempting to bridge the gap between horror at a dead shark and eating the dead shark, Reef slowly swam in a loop around the floating fish, flicking his tail at it as if inviting Sadie over. He gave another full-armed gesture before giving up when the half-siren continued to swim slowly backwards.
He paused. There had to be a way to make it appetizing, right? Something that had worked for him, when small fish were no longer an option-
The idea struck him a moment after he'd started moving. With careful motions, Reef swept a few swirls of red blood toward Sadie, screwing his expression up into something of an apology. Blood worked the same way for sharks as it did for a siren - not quite instinct and yet not a conscious choice. It would make her hungry, at least.
(sadie's so real for her reaction honestly LMAO
and REALL BY GOD. I just need like ten grand from some random stranger and i'll be set *sob*)

Sadie, still a ghostly pale shade of white, maybe almost green at this point, struggled to push her siren instincts into the back of her mind. She had no doubt that the two of them would be exhausted after this, and she had no idea how to shift back into hee regular, human form. She was still horrified with herself, and that Reef found this part of her remotely attractive.
Swallowing hard, still surprised she could breathe underwater, she shuffled a little bit closer, clearly a little more then reluctant. Maybe she moved closer o simply be near Reef, or maybe she was hungry. She couldn’t tell at the moment. It felt like her mind was moving thousands of miles per hour, and she felt like a little bit of a mess.
Awkwardly gesturing down towards the shark, she managed some sort of eating sign, completely unsure as to how it would work. Eating something raw like this made her stomach churn, and it clearly disgusted her. She’d be grateful to be above the water, even though now it felt comforting over anything else, the pressure was warm, and less claustrophobic.
(I don’t even know how to have Sadie react lmao that’s probably how I’d react but it wouldn’t be as graceful idk-)
(Oh man ten grand would be absolutely wonderful bro I don’t understand why everything is just so expensive like holy cow groceries ain’t as cheap as they used to be-)

Reef watched Sadie's further hesitation with a mix of surprise and acceptance. It may have been her half-human ancestry keeping her from indulging in the smell of blood, but the siren himself wouldn't be able to sway her further. She looked ready to heave back up whatever she did have in her stomach.
There had to be a way to ebb her over the fence. If not eating it raw, then-
The idea hit him all at once. With a small noise of enthusiasm - more of a loud hum accompanied by bubbles than anything else - Reef grasped onto the shark's top fin and began to swim upward. He gestured for Sadie to follow as best she could as he began to breach the waves. If she won't eat it raw, then we'll have to cook it. Humans knew how to cook fish, right? Surely lighting a fire on a wooden ship wouldn't cause too many issues.
He broke the surface with a soft splash, scattering droplets in the waves. Before Reef could duck his head back down to check on Sadie's progress, however, another road-block hit him - the ladder.
There was not an easy way to climb it without legs.
(REALLL i'd be horrified too tbh, and I eat raw salmon on the regular LOL)
(my job's going well, btw!! they've been giving me three day weekends for some reason, but honestly, i'm not complaining)
