The first thing the hatchlings see are shadows. Light and dark dance over a nest of black fabric and little glimmering gemstones. They can feel fur, soft and warm. They can hear a voice, telling stories to match the shadows on the walls speckled with lights. A smaller orange streak of fur adds little specks of light to the nest, catching the eyes of the hatchlings. A set of long little bodies spring up to try and catch one of the shadows, toppling as the pups fall out of the nest.

A soft chuckle distracts them from their game of chase, drawing their attention to a pair of foxlike heads smiling at them. The smaller head catches another mote of light, taking the pups' paws as he gives them to the little ones. The larger head gives a playful grin, teasing the pups with another little shadow puppet. The new parents fawn over their little ones, watching them play with their little illusions. Pup or kit, or perhaps something else entirely, one thing is clear to them. With a playful trickster of a mother and a gentle loving father, they're set to find a silver lining in their darkest hours as easily as they would on their brightest days.
