A Tale of Wonders Seen

I sit atop the Crow’s Nest, my feathers puffed out as I watch the river flow by. The Kelpie’s Cry is on its way to a city I know well, at least if you count the stories I read and heard. It is one of the first along the banks of the Rath Do Kun. According to Captain Cambrie, the Silver Raven had found good fortune in the ports there, and I wouldn’t blame my poor Captain for trying her luck with the city’s merchants. After all, the ice had frozen us in for the winter, and I wasn’t the only one who believed we’d been stuck in the ports of Krahvulon for much too long. The city didn’t have much to offer for traders like us, and we had little to offer them once the ice set in. I still chuckle now as I recall how cold the drakes of the little city were after our supply had dwindled. With how quickly dusk fell there… Well, it was no wonder their city is called Krahvulon. Even their people were cold as the night after we closed up shop!

I look down at the rest of the crew, milling about like bitemes on the back of a giant. To me at least, the little glimpse of a view is amusing, but I know there is more to it than that. I can see it in the swiftness of their step, the faint buzzing of voices below. The fact that Captain Cambrie herself is topdeck, waddling about and snapping at those who were moving too slow for her liking spoke volumes. We all know what’s coming, that we’re close to the city, to a port with a tavern, warm baths, and stories to tell. Even the Captain’s sharp tongue doesn’t take them for long, and their jumps quickly turn to running with smiles on their faces. From what I can read, they all seem to be quite happy, and I cannot help but join them.

I soon look back to the river, unable to take too much of the swaying from so high up. While the sway of the ship is gentle below, up here the nest makes great arcs to and fro, taking me with it. I narrow my eyes as I look out, our ship just coming out from a row of cliffs. I am the first to make the call.

There, before my eyes, is the city I know so well. Great sweeping arches greet my eyes, so bright they rival the sun. I know they are just the many buildings and spires, made of many white stones and the brightest of metals, but I cannot stop myself from gawking at the sight. I still remember when it was but a small port, with hardly the grandiose that the city now boasts. I can see a web of streets, many leading to birch ports extending into the Rath Do Kun like alabaster claws, and even smaller ships scuttle about in the water. That, however, isn’t the greatest sight of all.

There, extending from the center of the city, is a pure white bridge, seeming to glow brighter than the buildings spiraling out from it. The spires, the watchtowers, all around the buildings I ever saw in my life pale in comparison to the Sot Miirad. I know, even from here, that the smallest specks I can see crossing are Imperials and Ridgebacks making their way to and from the city, crossing one of the few wonders our world has yet to offer. Even their claws will leave no mark, nor will any weapon a dragon could ever make. Some say it is a remnant of the Second Age, but no drake would try to think beyond that. Let the dragons of Past Light dig into the past under the soil where the Second Age seemed to begin and end at the Pillar. The rest of dragonkind can focus on the present. At least, that’s what most drakes say.

I still shiver at the sight before flying down to the Captain, pointing out Sot Miirad to her. She smiles for a moment at the sight of the arching bridge, and I look over to her as she talks about how the white bridge is a mystery still to dragonkind, how the material remains unknown to us. I know she has seen things much like this before, and I know her stance on the matter. These Wonders of our world should be treated with caution. She even says as much now, even as our ship sails beneath the great bridge to reach the nearest dock. I turn back to the bridge with a smile on my face as we pass underneath it.

“That may be true, but the Light blind me if it doesn’t make a fine bridge!”

I get a hardy shove to the lines as she chuffs at me, and I can only laugh as we pull into Dokun Brod, the City of Light. I’m happy to see a line of merchants waiting for us, and I can just picture a nice, fluffy bed, a warm meal, and a hearty song in my heart.

We made it, and it seems Captain Firth hadn’t taken all the good fortune with her when she left.

We’ll all sleep well tonight.
