Lucent's secret is that he's heard of the Black Pearls before. Been warned of them, really. So when he came across this scampering, skittish creature squinting at the overcast sky like it was the loudest noonday sun, he had his suspicions. If he was someone raised more righteous, or someone more inclined to action in defense of the greater good, he might've quashed her right there and known no one would come looking for her. Instead he asked if she needed help. He could never leave well enough alone, and he wanted to see - what does she want? Where is she going? He watched slowly as, over the course of the next days-that-turned-into-weeks, she latched onto him as an anchor point in this terrifying new world. He thought: oh, no. He thought: this is a terrible time to develop a sense of noble protectiveness, which he always privately called "not being able to mind your own business", and aiming it at her instead of at her potential victims - their babies, his children - was probably wrong too. But if he's here now, trying to keep their hatchlings safe from her lessons - and trying to keep the world safe from her - what's one more person to look out for? |
