Biography

She joined the clan that Alora, her best friend, had joined.
Small, but growing.
She watched Alora slowly change.
And wished she could too.

For you see...
She was of a pale lineage.
None of her family had the brilliant colors of a true Coatl.
It didn't bother them that most Coat would shun them.
It did her.
She wanted to be a shocking pink that screamed of health.
She supposed she was lucky, she could have been born as pale as her grandmother.
But still.
Her dream, was to be more.

There was no changing her color though.
Her patterns and the genes that controlled them?
Yes.
Alora had proven that.
And if she had wanted; Torquil, the head of the clan, would have helped.
But she didn't mind them.
Rather liked her lace, in fact.

Her color?
No.
There was no changing her color.
Not without huge cost and random risk.
She could turn out even paler.

So she wrapped herself in black ribbon and decided to make sure her hatchlings could go among the Coatl with pride.
She would turn her back on her lineage.

He joined, a beautiful Pearlcatcher, Meditate.
She knew that chances of her hatchlings being Coatl's was rare.
But they would be beautiful.

She was wrong.
He told her that they were beautiful.
Alora and Torquil told her that they didn't need to be a brilliant color.
She gazed at her two little Pearlcatchers and smiled.
That was right.
They didn't need to be brilliant.
And they were hers, so she loved them.

EarlGrey grew into a proud drake and joined the ranks of Windsinger.
She learned Alora's pain.
LondonFog; wilder then her brother, wanted to live, find a mate, and have a family before joining him in the Dominance.
She loved them both and tried to be supportive of them.

But she wouldn't make the same mating mistake again.
Her next hatchlings would be brilliant in color and Coatls.
She went looking for a displaced male who's color was so brilliant that he could overwhelm hers.
The choices were plentiful.
Shockingly plentiful.
But when she went to the Scrying room with them, the outcomes were always disappointing.
Maybe she should give up and Exalt?
But then she met three.
One was Gembound, but while promising, his red wasn't strong enough.
The other Red with Butterfly wings.
Wow.
Her hatchlings...
They would be amazing.
Her choice was made.

But then he came along, Alluvium.
He was beautiful and sparkled with Coatl health.
And her hatchlings might too.
But the Scrying room showed that there was a risk.
She wasn't willing to take that risk.
So she turned her back to him and looked at the Red Male.

"Are you sure?" He asked softly. "That color is the only important thing? What about attraction? What about love?"
She turned shocked eyes on him.
"I could love you. So easily. Our conversations have been interesting and fun. And I think you're gorgeous. "
Her breath caught in her throat.
"I would love to see our hatchlings. We would never know what we'd get. With him? You'd always have brilliant pink. With me? Any color under the sun. And we'd love them. Our family would be built on love. So to ask again. Is color really the only thing that matters?"
She broke eye contact and looked at the Red Male.
"Choose me. It'll be an adventure."
She looked back at him and closed her eyes.
She must be crazy.
But with her eyes closed she listened to her heart.
"It better be." she said with a smile and held out her hand.
"Without a doubt."
