After a somewhat rocky greeting with Mourn and Echo, the pair lead you back to their home, which is actually away from the Platforms of the Flyers. Set on solid ground, the pair of warriors live in an outpost, built of brilliant green bamboo and a woven palm leaf roof. The very top of the tower features a circular nest covered in furs, soft mosses and grasses, all woven together to create a wonderfully comfortable bed. The rest of the structure was more practical: open ledged defensive platforms, arrow slots, guard walls and, of course, an armory at the very bottom, mildly stocked. As soon as you arrived, Mourn disappeared into the nest, a growl escaping her throat as she went. Echo huffed loudly after her mate but made no move to follow, instead handing you another scribbled note.
“Sorry for that, she means no offense. This is our home, one of the outposts for clan defense. Mourn doesn’t like to live with other dragons, so it’s a bit of a fly, hope it wasn’t a problem.”

Echo spent her childhood in the Tangled Wood, but not as a carefree, pranking hatchling. She was drafted into training for the Shadowbinder's army as soon as she hatched, as her ancestors had traditionally fought in the minor war between Shadow and other flights. Her early childhood consisted almost entirely of lessons in lore, agility, strength training, and weapons practice, honing her into a skilled warrior. Less than a year later, her training was complete, and Echo was exalted to the ranks of the Shadowbinder to fight the ongoing war with other flights. For six solid months, Echo did just that; she fought loyally for her flight and won many battles, making a name for herself in the process. However, as with most things in life, this did not last forever.

Echo was on the front lines, engaged in a skirmish with Arcane, when tragedy struck. A powerful magic blast sent the Wildclaw flying back, and Echo was slammed into a rock, passing out moments later. She eventually awoke in the medic's tent and called for the healer, rearing to get back in the battle as many Wildclaws did. The weathered Mirror serving as her unit’s healer appeared, and he spoke to her. Echo heard only silence. After a panicked moment, some tough diagnosing, and a pained denial, Echo came to the same conclusion set out by her doctor. The skilled warrior had gone deaf due to head trauma. Not long after the diagnosis, Echo left the war front, finding she could no longer keep up with the changing variables in war with her hearing lost. She still had a fighter’s spirit in her, and was determined to use it to her advantage.
Echo traveled to the Shifting Expanse, following a job request for a guard from the Galestorm Flyers, hoping her skills in battle would be useful despite her deafness. Arriving at the Flyers, Echo was met with gracious thanks from the entire clan, who were currently struggling to maintain defense of their territory and the Dark Queen with their limited numbers. Echo soon found herself outfitted in full armor and sent to guard the territory with the elusive Guardian, Mourn.

Over the coming months, Echo found herself befriending Mourn and learning to fight without her hearing. As she quietly coaxed the proclaimed monster from her shell, Echo revised many of her battle strategies to work around another dragon, relying more on her sight than her hearing. She learned to fight with Mourn as her ears, growing closer and closer, particularly once a form of sign language was developed and taught to the clan for Echo’s benefit. While this new language was indeed beneficial to Echo, allowing her communication with clanmates, Mourn found it useful as well, considering she was functionally mute due to her mutations. The friendship between Mourn and Echo founded on the battlefield slowly shifted into a romance, allowing the two to reside comfortably on the edges of the clan. When it came time for the Flyers to move to the Plateau, Echo was unconcerned; if her sudden deafness had taught her anything, it was how to adapt to new situations with ease. Mourn was not so comfortable with returning to her birthplace, but Echo was incredibly pleased when the skittish warrior stayed by her side and moved with the Flyers, allowing them to settle into more peaceful lives in the less dangerous lands of the Plateau.

At first glance, Echo appears to be a classical cautious loner. She sticks to the edge of the clan, only entering the main Platforms for infrequent supply trips or as a comfort to Mourn’s slow exploration of civilized society. Her deafness makes her hyper sensitive to touch, and while she uses mirrors and her keen sense of smell in her lair to maintain awareness, those who do startle her with touch receive a smack in the face from her powerful tail. Conversations with Echo reveal a quiet politeness, partly stemming from the difficulty in communicating with strangers and her clanmates varying understanding of sign language. Despite all of this, Echo has a witty sense of humor that gains her quite a few friendly acquaintances among her clanmates, even if her conversations are infrequent and sometimes stilted. She takes to life with a sense of humor, finding joy in all that she can because it helped her continue in life when she first lost her hearing. Everyone knows she is a determined dragon, one who does not give up on life and pushes others to do the same.
Out of all her clanmates, Echo is closest with Mourn, which is what led to the romance between them in the first place. To Echo, Mourn is a sign of resilience in the face of adversity from all angles--Mourn suffered so much in life but never faltered, continued to try despite everything. Echo has had her fair share of hurt in the world, and though she has strength of her own, she has always admired the strength Mourn carries. Echo was one of the first to suggest to Mourn that perhaps her Charge was Mourn herself, a thought that stemmed from watching the Guardian fight on the battlefield beside her for so long. Echo trusts Mourn explicitly and implicitly, which has saved her life many times in battle.

Though Echo has good relations with Hellebore as well--the Imperial often fight alongside Mourn and Echo--her closest friend is in fact Varan, the only other completely deaf dragon of the Flyers. Though they came about their deafness in very different manners, the two share many of the difficulties they have faced over the years. Where Echo struggled to cope on the battlefield, Varan struggled on the musical stand. They both fought their way through these struggles learned to cope and continue, which created a foundation for a strong friendship that blossomed over the years.
