Born in a thicket made of thorns deep in the Gladvines to a Green Lich Butcher came into the world as small and vulnerable as anything that had ever been. His father had little interest in him but tolerated Butcher’s existence for a time. Butcher was, ultimately, a failure to his father and cast out to find his own way.

Butcher traveled far and wide and came to the Hewn City where he ran into his older half sister Noir. Butcher could be charming when he wanted and Noir had no idea that Butcher would come to steal one of her hatchlings fresh out of the egg and then disappear into the night. He ran south to the Wastes with the hatchling he could feel was full to bursting with strange and powerful magic.

There he begged an audience with Nadalin, saying he was seeking refuge from dragons hunting his niece that had killed her family. Nadalin granted the protection and Butcher hid away in the Tale until those trying to find him gave up. His niece grew and so did her magic. He fostered her abilities and she became powerful. Powerful enough that those aboard the Tale became anxious about having her aboard and Butcher was granted an airship, which he named the Slaughter Three.

On the Slaughter Three he learned many things and performed many experiments, proclaiming himself a doctor. But he was more a scientist than not. He learned to create life, fake life maybe, but life,

With his own ship Butcher was free to do as he wanted. He began calling himself a doctor. He was interested in seeing how things work and how and why they live. He began experimenting on all manner of things both dragon and beast, safe and secret on his ship. Eventually he felt he’d learned a great deal and took a golem monster in the shape of Snapper he’d made out to the Hewn City. What other wonderful and dangerous things like his niece could he find out there? He found several dragons, kidnapped, taken, and stolen and brought them back to the Slaughter Three where he raised them and conducted more experiments on.

Butcher was not satisfied with that. He wanted to become more powerful than he was. So Butcher sought power which led him to the Fortress of Ends. There, in a cell, he found a demon, something as ancient as the dragon gods, and dark as the Shade but it was not the Shade. It said to him; feed me, and you will become strong.

Butcher fed all but one of the Hewn Wyrms he’d found to the demon, leaving only the Tongue, a true abomination, spared. Though perhaps he was afraid of what would actually happen if he fed something like the Tongue to the demon, as though he knew what it truely was. The demon grew fat and satisfied and as his reward Butcher became infested by the demon and it changed him. Butcher left with the infestation and the embodiment of the demon, a worm that called itself Oryx, and it spoke to him.

Now stronger than he was Butcher returned to the Gladevines and found the Green Lich. He challenged his father to a duel and slew him. Oryx said if he ate the body of his father, and fed the demon inside him with his power, he would become stronger. So Butcher did so and feasted upon the body of his father and became stronger.
