“If we follow the compass, we’ll be back in an hour,” said Conor, his steps leaving deep imprints on the snow. “What compass?” the Pearlcatcher said. “You haven’t brought anything with you—compass or not. I’m so hungry, I haven’t eaten in days! Did you think to bring the poor, frozen, traveler anything warm to drink? Nooooo. All you brought was cold water! And you’re supposed to be my savior. Hmph.” The bright little Guardian’s eyes slowly blinked, and Conor cocked his head. “If we follow the compass, we’ll be back in an hour,” he repeated, then turned around and sprinted through the snow, leaving behind the arrogant Pearlcatcher to catch up.
Days later, the Pearlcatcher lingered in the town that Conor had brought him back to (within the hour, to be precise). He sat in the tavern with a warm drink, chatting with the locals until the weather warmed up. “I met this ugly Guardian the other day,” he told his fellow patrons. “He said he was coming to ‘save me’ but all he did was tell me what to do and where to go. And all he brought was water! Who does that? When you save a lost dragon, you should bring something warm to drink at the very least!” The tavern went quiet. “You aren’t talking about

Conor, are you?” said a large Snapper behind the bar. “What if I am?” the Pearlcatcher snapped. “What does it matter to you?” “That ‘ugly Guardian’ saved my daughter when she was lost in a blizzard,” the Snapper said menacingly. “And he saved me when I was buried in an avalanche!” yelled a small Fae. “It was a piece of hail,” another dragon interjected. “Regardless,” the Snapper said. “Everyone here has someone they know who was saved by Conor–he’s a miracle. He always knows where to go. If you have a problem with him, get out.”

Soon, a Pearlcatcher sat by himself in the snow outside the tavern.
