The Clan's Dragon Gods Creation Myth

In the beginning there was a divide between the raw matter of the world and the arcane energies that swirled around it.

The world was unable to settle, constantly clashing and destroying itself with the restless energies that filled it.

Seeking a balance the energies strove to settle the planet, dividing itself until four native elements were formed from the arcane energy. The four elements worked to settle the planet, and as they did so gained awareness, giving birth to four elemental dragon gods.

The planet was settled, with the wild energies that had torn it apart now contained within the four dragon gods. In this new world they looked across the surface and dreamed of what could be.

They were unaware of each other until they began to craft the world, each one shaping it to their own ideas. The Windsinger wished to create a world of canyons and swirling vortexes that would sing in harmony as the wind rushed through them. The Tidelord wished to bury into the depths of the sea and send forth mysteries to depict the course of the world. The Flamecaller wished to challenge the sun itself with the glory of the world, the Earthshaker wishing to shield the planet against all harm with firm shields built of stone and earth.

Discovering each other the young gods fell to battling each other, each seeking to preserve their own vision of the planet, unaware that it was together they had formed it.

The clashing of the primal elements unsettled the planet, destroying much of what they had created. Destructive magic sparked across the surface stirring up the energies that had only settled by creating the four fierce beings that now battled across it's lands.

The clashing storms created by the battle between Windsinger and Tidelord unleashed crackling lightning that raced across the surface, the released energy forming into a new entity, Stormcatcher. The new god was as volatile as the storm that had birthed him, sweeping into the battle to claim land for himself.

Earthshaker and Flamecaller's battle scorched the earth, leaving it barren and empty. The planet shook to the core, trying to heal itself desperately. A great chill spread forth over the land creating the Icewarden, a new god as cold and merciless as the barren land that had birthed him. He drove Earthshaker and Flamecaller out mercilessly.

The harmonies of the planet thrown desperately off balance the world balanced desperately on the tip between light and dark. Acting in desperation to try and save itself the world's arcane energies again took action, creating two new goddesses to try and tip the balance and stop the arcane energy from destroying the new world. Lightweaver soared through the day, watching the battling gods and holding the day steady, while Shadowbinder hid herself deep in the night, looking for her chance to fight back and stop the destruction.

Lightweaver and Shadowbinder kept the world from being utterly destroyed by the rampant destruction of the other gods, but the arcane energy they battled with so thoughtlessly was powerful, and drew the attention of something that should never have been.

A formless entity called the Shade noticed the world, glittering with magic and new life. The Shade was always hungry, always looking for things to consume to slow the hunger that drove it to devour everything it touched. The arcane energy and new life of the world, and the fierce dragon gods that battled in it, was a feast for it.

The Shadow drew the energy and life of the planet to it slowly, savoring the feast. At first the dragon gods were so consumed in their own battle to not notice the fading of the planet, the drain of their own magic. Color began to drain, sinking into longer and longer nights with the planet trying to recover what was lost. The Shade never allowed it, the rampant battles during the day only quickening the world's death.

Finding themselves weakened the dragon gods finally stopped what they were doing to find what was tiring them. They were shocked to discover that the world they had longed to shape had been so mercilessly damaged in their battles, and that an enemy had come preying on their weakness.

The Shade was powerful enough to devour a god. Separate they didn't stand a chance against the Shade. Terrified the dragon gods fled to the center of the world, standing together the way they hadn't since the planet had first been born. Enraged by the threat to the world she loved Flamecaller was quick to attack the Shade. Emboldened by her actions the other dragon gods leaped to battle. Together they pushed aside their enmities and battled the Shade.

The force of the combined gods was too much for it. Greatly weakened it fled, hoping to keep itself from the utter destruction it had delivered itself so many times.

The dragon gods cheered, but the battle had cost them. They had been weakened as well by the battle. They could no longer continue to fight each other as they had. Earthshaker was the one to propose the solution.

They would form a shield over the world, to help heal it from the battles and protect it from any enemies that would threaten it. The shield would be powered by their combined magic, and allow them to sleep until the time came for them to again walk the world.

The dragon gods agreed, and wearily set to work, settling into a deep hibernation inside a pillar that provided the magic for their shield. So the gods slept, and the world began to heal.

As the gods slept new life formed on the planet. Intelligent tribes found the pillar the dragon gods had built, and centered it for their religion, sensing the great energy inside.

The tribes grew and expanded, spreading across the world. Always the pillar remained the center of their civilization. Their technology advanced, and the old religion began to fall away, people investing in science to solve what was behind the pillar. It promised vast limitless energy, and they were hungry to have it for themselves.

However in seeking to harness the energy in the pillar they made a great mistake.

They didn't understand what they were truly tapping into, and when they fired up the engine to release the energy they created a great cataclysm, the pent up arcane energy racing across the world and extinguishing life.

Their attempts to harness the energy for themselves brought forth the extinction of the greatest civilization the world had known.

Released back into the world the energies again sought to stabilize themselves. The destruction created by the release of the unstable energy had destroyed much of the planet. Some of the arcane energy was taken by the damaged lands and used to heal, recovering itself. The healing energy took on a purpose, birthing a new dragon goddess, Gladekeeper.

At the same time there were areas of the world that were completely unable to heal, left to decay and rot. The energy that spread through there focused on the death and destruction, forming Plaguebringer.

The twin goddesses were unaware of what had been before their birth, simply walking the world and spreading their nature, Plaguebringer decaying and sickening the land where she wandered, Gladekeeper healing it. It wasn't long before they noticed each other. Neither could stand the other, opposites in nature in every way. They began to battle for supremacy, neither able to fully get hold of the other as they were equally matched.

The last of the arcane energy that had been released sensed some of the purpose for why it had been created, drawn to the machine that had birthed it. It coalesced into a pure form of it's essence, a dragon god of arcane energy born. He did not notice the battling goddesses. He was drawn more to the pillar, where the energies had hummed.

The Arcanist studied the pillar, testing the energies. He climbed it, seeking to understand it's purpose and how it worked. From above he could see the heavens, and was drawn in by the beauty of the stars.

The Arcanist sat there, enraptured by the beauty of space, for days. He was unaware of the battle below him, and the awakening energies brought by the sister goddesses.

Something else did notice though. The Shade had recovered after so many centuries spent cast into the edges of space, and once more was unable to resist the pull of the world with it's rich energies. The pull between new life and decay as the world was torn between the two sisters was enough to send it traveling out.

When the Arcanist noticed the entity he did not understand what it was right away. He saw it blot out a few stars, traveling to where he was. At first he imagined that it was something similar to himself, and attempted to communicate. But his actions only alerted the Shade to where the center of the energies it desired to consume were.

When he realized what he had done the Arcanist looked for a way to save his world. He was still young, and yet to understand what was around him, but he did not wish for it to end so soon. Looking for a solution he found it in the very pillar he had been drawn to.

The arcane ability he had allowed him to understand the pillar's purpose, and the shield he created. He could sense the eight slumbering gods within it, and knew that they could help him stop the entity.

Drawing on it he asked for their power to propel back the Shade from the world before it reached them.

The twin goddesses sensed the pull of energy, and halted their battle, shocked by the knowledge that they weren't alone. They journeyed toward the pillar to see what was happening.

The centuries of sleep had been a blessing to the eight gods. They were more powerful than they had been when they began their slumber. Stirring they answered the call of the young dragon god and woke, lending their power to the battle.

The Shade was pushed back once more, this time utterly destroyed. It had not expected to face the combined power, and the dragon gods were wiser this time having faced it before.

Plaguebringer and Gladekeeper watched in awe as the pillar shattered, the eight gods awakening and following the lead of a young dragon, barely old enough to understand his part.

The eight gods looked out on the world they had saved again, and were not satisfied with what they saw.

They had worked together to protect the world from being destroyed, yet it seemed that despite this destruction had again come to their world. They resolved to keep it from happening again, awake once more and ready to shape the world.

They did not wish to risk falling to fighting amongst each other once more, and they knew it was a possibility. Plaguebringer and Gladekeeper, though sisters, could not be near each other without trying to kill the other.

Flamecaller and Icewarden were hostile to each other, Icewarden easily provoking Flamecaller to a fight.

To prevent the chance of them falling into battle with each other once more they chose to divide the world, working together to keep the arcane energies calm and the world safe, while still allowing each of them a portion of land to shape after their own nature.

This suited them very well, and while fights still broke out occasionally over territory they found peace.

Shaping creatures after themselves this time they created dragons endowed with the elements of their gods to live in their lands, occasionally calling a dragon to serve them directly.

This isn't to say things were perfect.

Plaguebringer was eager to push boundaries, and Shadowbringer loved to play tricks on the other gods to steal pieces of their territories.

But the threat of the world destroying itself was gone, protected by the eleven dragon gods, and the elemental dragons that served them.
