and by that i mean G1 collectors, mono-breed/color lairs, lairs where every dragon is a planned breeding project, lairs where every dragon has a UMA, color-coded lairs with put-together outfits for everyone, and so on and so forth... how do you do it? as in:

how did you decide what you wanted/which aesthetic for your lair?
how long did it take you to get to where you are now?
how much does it cost and how do you make that money?
how often do you get rid of dragons, and/or how often do you change it up?
and, for those who went really hardcore, how do you have the willpower to keep your lair the way that it is and never deviate?
i'm very curious to hear what y'all have to say! i have always wanted to have a lair that looks very clean and organized with dragons of primarily blue & green shades. buuut whenever i try to start building something, i always kinda lose hold of it. i want to hear others' experiences to get a better idea of methods or mindsets people had!! thank you in advance for responding [emoji=heart size=1]

I don't have a super tight aesthetic (some of my tabs are more organised than others, my Stygian Temple and Fleuyer Town tabs are some of the better examples) but I'm a g1 lair and I'm pretty strict about what dragons I pick up or decide to keep. That's mostly because I'm picky but to answer your questions:

1. This kind of just happened. I found that if I'm rushing to gene a dragon and I can't get enough of showing it off to other people, it's a pretty safe bet that I'll like that dragon for a long time. If a dragon sits around ungened for a few months then I'm probably not that into it so I'll sell or get rid of it. Turns out I really only like earthy and neutral colours for the most part.

2. Hard to say, I feel like I've been working on my lair pretty much my whole FR life? I've had a few overhauls though. The last one was about two years ago so all dragons I currently have were obtained in the last two years.

3. Let's not get into that question ... xD I make dragon cash through a lot of ways, mostly Coli-ing, exalting, selling loot on the AH, selling other stuff like my prettier hatchlings or old fest stuff. If I had to give a ballpark, I would say the average dragon in my lair costs me about 3kg in acquiring, geneing, dressing, skinning, etc.

4. Mentioned this a little bit already, it seems like every 2-3 years I completely throw out my lair as it is save for a few choice dragons and start over. This has less to do with me going for a new aesthetic and more with me just getting bored of running out of projects to do though. My aesthetic back then was pretty much the same as it is now. Every 6 months or so I look through my WIP tab and try to get rid of everything that's been sitting there for a few months with no progress.

5. Again, it's just what I like, and it turns out I only mostly like one thing :p Nothing wrong with having multiple aesthetic tabs though. I think lairs that have several tabs where each is dedicated to one colour or aesthetic are super cool.

my main lair is only orange g1s! honestly having a tight colour range for your lair feels great in my experience; good luck with your potential greenish-blueish lair :D
1. how did you decide what you wanted/which aesthetic for your lair?
honestly it was something i had wanted to go for probably years, but i was afraid that limiting my lair so much would ruin my enjoyment of fr. going from a g2+ lair to a g1 lair made me realise that having some limits was fun, though, and if anything it reinvigorated my activity here :)
2. how long did it take you to get to where you are now?
apparently about 8 months? honestly it's harder part to find orange g1s than actually afford them ASLDKJASLGK. i stalk the ah and auction subforum pretty frequently, but even then i only have ~25 at the moment.
3. how much does it cost and how do you make that money?
wow, i track dragon costs in their bios but didn't realise how costly my lair was til now :') each dragon has cost anywhere between 0g (someone noticed i collected orange g1s and gifted me a dragon for free! go them!) and 5500g (for a double cantaloupe). i have no qualms buying gem genes or umas, but don't actively seek them out; i probably spend an average of another 1000g for that part? honestly i'm pretty fortunate that orange isn't a terribly popular colour because i feel like i've gotten some really great deals! as for how i make that money, daily fairgrounds (75kt) + bonding with a lot of familiars (30kt atm), occasional exalting, baldwin brewing, and grinding the heck out of notn. i profited about 27kg last december, and i saved some eggs to subsist me through the year.
5. how often do you get rid of dragons, and/or how often do you change it up?
this lair is young enough that this hasn't come up yet! i used to purge my lair quite regularly, but having a self-imposed strict theme makes me more attached to my lair than ever. Answering as a purely G1 lair with 0 visual cohesion

how did you decide what you wanted/which aesthetic for your lair?
It only took a couple of months - I couldn't get attached to any of the dragons that I'd bought finished, but I was VERY attached to the G1 projects I'd finished - so I started moving into G1s exclusively and then eventually purged everything bred from my lair.

All dragons must have all 3 gene slots filled and all dragons must have an accent/skin before being considered complete.

I like having a variety of colors and styles in my lair, so no aesthetic lair for me.

how long did it take you to get to where you are now?
Been here consistently making slow progress since I joined in 2013.

how much does it cost and how do you make that money?
Depends on the project! A pair of Coatls with triple gem genes would run just shy of 12k gems + the cost of their skins or accents. A pair of Fathoms in coli / Arlo genes is basically free before the accents.

I play the slow game usually - I level and exalt the fodder that I breed, and I max fairgrounds every day. This year for NotN, I sold most of my eggs - and I used that to put a dent in some of the more expensive things I needed for projects, like gem breed scrolls.

how often do you get rid of dragons, and/or how often do you change it up?
'Changing it up' is a terribly expensive endeavor :'D I'm actually in the middle of revamping some of my older dragons - getting them new mates and updated genes. I'm expecting to be at it for the next few years. I very rarely get rid of dragons - once they're done, they stay forever.

The ones I'm updating were mostly older pairs from my first few years of playing - before I paid attention to terts and before I had a good grasp of the color wheel. Some of the original mates I picked for my dragons just never really worked out well, and some of their tert genes were very unfortunate and ended up being hard to work with. I've been resolving it slowly but surely and restoring my love for these dragons.

and, for those who went really hardcore, how do you have the willpower to keep your lair the way that it is and never deviate?

It's very easy - finishing a G1 project sparks joy, so I keep doing it. It doesn't take any willpower at all!

Starting a new project feels daunting sometimes (especially if it's an expensive one) but I can make at least a little bit of tangible progress every single day.

-how did you decide what you wanted/which aesthetic for your lair?
I have tritanomaly so I focust on cyan and red (including magenta) colors. Yellows/maize range too since they look the same as white and therefore are very bright.

-how long did it take you to get to where you are now?
Uuhh, if you only count actively playing time, 3 years or so. Almost 10 otherwise.

-how much does it cost and how do you make that money?
Each dragon is over a million to customise. I sell the garbage from exploring and the eggs I get there, deal with Crim several times a day, little bit of higher/lower, cook expensive items at Baldwin's or just melt random junk and sell the materials, get expensive drops from the Coliseum, mass sell all of my festival currency and items every month etc.

-how often do you get rid of dragons, and/or how often do you change it up?
Depends. I have two pools, a massive one that may or may not become fodder and another of actual projects. Once every few months I may expel dragons from either pool if my plans end up not requiring them. More often for the more massive pool. Though by now only the the massive pool still exists, the others consolidated their perma position.

-and, for those who went really hardcore, how do you have the willpower to keep your lair the way that it is and never deviate?
It's just a game, it's not that serious. I do whatever I want, however I want and have other stuff in life to think about than some dragon game if it is bothering me that much.

G1 lair here!
  • how did you decide what you wanted/which aesthetic for your lair?
I figured it out after maybe a year or so of playing the game, I think! I'd realized that it was very hard for me to get attached to dragons that I just bought as-is, and my lair had a very high turnover rate as I got bored with them. G1s feel so much more personal to me, and I like knowing that everything about them is intentional and I put effort into every single one of them. My lair feels like it's mine.
As far as aesthetics go, I really love a pirate/nautical theme, and I just do what makes me happy there! :) I used to be in Light and got bogged down with trying to fit that sort of generic angelic aesthetic, and I'm much happier now.
  • how long did it take you to get to where you are now?
Tough to say, I don't ever want to get to a point where my lair actually feels "finished" because that's just boring, y'know? But I'm happy where I'm at, and it's taken a few years to get to that point.
  • how much does it cost and how do you make that money?
Depends on the dragon, but I don't shy away from gem genes/breeds and projects can stack up, not to mention UMAs. I max out fairgrounds every day and breed my own fodder, and that's steady income. I also go hard on NOTN and that helps fund UMA purchases throughout the year (I am to make at least 1kg profit every day of NOTN, ideally more - pretty easy if you just sell all your chests/eggs!).
  • how often do you get rid of dragons, and/or how often do you change it up?
I get rid of dragons very rarely, I try to only buy dragons that I really really love. Lair purges do happen, though, maybe once or twice a year.

I don't have a strict aesthetic for my lair, but my thing is unique colors. As in, dragons that are less than 100 or so of their color combo ever born. Though most of my dragons tend to be 1 of 20 or less, sometimes being the only unexalted one. All my dragons have links to their color search in their bios, save for a few who aren't unique (that I mostly kept due to them being old or sentimental. I only have one XYX in my entire lair, and he's one that I bred during my first year on the site who somehow survived until now, so he gets a pass because he's sentimental.

To answer your questions:
  • Honestly... this was all an accident really? I've never liked XXX or XXY dragons, as I feel that they are oversaturated and also don't provide much challenge when picking genes. So my lair ended up being exclusively XYZ colors, and eventually I started to realize what I was doing absentmindedly and began to be more intentional with it.
  • As long as i've been playing (2017) so 8 years I guess.
  • It doesn't cost me much at all, seeing as XYZs aren't generally liked by most of the userbase, and the inherent nature of trying to find odd color combos means most of my dragons are fodder saves.
  • I only get rid of a dragon if I feel that I can't make the colors work together, or if it just doesn't personally fit my aesthetic.

For me, it just kind of... happened? Hyperfixation go brr and one thing led to another. Then again, you can't even call my lair super "themed" as I refuse to get rid of my other dragons-- I've just been slowly shoveling them into the hibden + dragging old hibden dragons I've fallen out of love with out to sell. In a perfect world my themed dragons would all be g1s, but they all needed such specific combos (+ eyes) that it'd be too grueling of an undertaking for me. So, to justify spending millions of treasure on non g1 dragons including breed changes, eye vials, etc. I've been steadily training them to 25, tincturing them, and fully statting+stoning them to make them all coli-ready. Super unnecessary, yes! But it makes my brain happy to swap my silly little coliseum guys out at random, so here I am. ----- Edit: As far as the actual cost, I've been steadily offselling old items I don't want anymore. Old fest apparel, gem apparel that was on dragons I no longer had attachment to, old UMAs, g1s. On another thread I listed all of the genes I've purchased so far for them and it adds up to a whopping 9,320,000[emoji=treasure size=1], and that's only genes-- not counting apparel, scenes, silhouette scrolls, effects... And I've still got a long way to go. Ouch my virtual wallet

I think mine counts as "color-coded lairs with put-together outfits for everyone" (considering my dozens and dozens of fully-finished permas!), so

how did you decide what you wanted/which aesthetic for your lair?

honestly, my aesthetics are all over the place. I often just find a good colour combo in the scrying workshop and decide I want a dragon with it, or simply find a fodder g1 and mess with it until I find a scry that I think looks good. which could be anything!

how long did it take you to get to where you are now?

well, when I joined in 2018 I wasn't actually good at making scries or outfits, so I wouldn't count back then. when I became active again in 2020 ditto - I only cane up with one or two really great outifts back then. maybe ~2021 was when I started getting really good at scrying and dressing, so I've been slowly building my lair since then!

how much does it cost and how do you make that money?

I've been maxing out fairgrounds everyday for YEARS, so that's where most of my money comes from! I don't have just g1s, so many of my outfits were very affordable, but yeah the costs have definitely added up to a lot over time. 75kt a day goes a LONG way though!!

how often do you get rid of dragons, and/or how often do you change it up?

finished dragons? VERY rarely. I'm pretty happy with most outfits I've come up with since 2021, so once a dragon is finished, it usually stays in my finished tab for the rest of time! I guess I do sometimes revamp some dragons, but the majority have stayed there for years now :)

finished dragons? VERY rarely. I'm pretty happy with most outfits I've come up with since 2021, so once a dragon is finished, it usually stays in my finished tab for the rest of time! I guess I do sometimes revamp some dragons, but the majority have stayed there for years now :)

1. I've never had a designated aesthetic beyond just what I think is pretty. Over time I just wanted something to work towards. When you've been here awhile, you tend to complete a lot and accrue money and need to find other goals to focus on or you'll get bored.

2. I've been here for 10ish years, and I think I started collecting g1s maybe a year to two years in. Though I progressively improve and add to those I can.

3. In the average player's perspective, a lot. I refuse to ever 'settle' for anything. I plan my gene projects, outfits, and skins around what looks best, price be damned. To me, what's the point of having it and going through all the work if it's not the best it possibly can be/that I can do? To me though, it doesn't often feel like as much. My persepctive on currency would have had to change over time with the price tags for things.

I make most of my money through selling everything that isn't nailed down for gems. Lots of buying cheap fodder and selling high or leveling and exalting. Once upon a time I made some decent money through cross site trades, but haven't done that for a few years now.

4. I don't. The way my lair works, is that I have a collection of...idk what to call them. Elite? Pristine? A showcase of dragons that I want to to spoil and perfect. I save every penny so that I can continually get them art, beautify them, or add another addition to that collection that I adore. If I'm getting rid of dragons, I've made a mistake somewhere. That means I've aquired dragons I don't really care for. Put money into them that I could have spent elsewhere. I am very picky(?) Or careful to make sure all additions are dragons I can actually keep for the long haul. I did make a few mistakes in the past that I've learned from.

5. Luckily for me, I didn't go any harder than a g1 lair. If I had to stick to partifular colors or breed, I think I would have gotten bored. I do a have very limited breed pool but that's just because I only like certain breeds so it's not very difficult. I do have a naming theme that I stick to, and that can cause me to jump through hoops for awhile but so far it's always worked out.
