I tend to scatter self-hatched Gen1's if they have hideous colors .....
I seem to get more luck with scatters than I do with just hatching outright, which is what keeps me scattering vs just buying eggs to hatch.
I rarely scatter more than a handful of times though, as after that its kinda just throwing money away xD
Take for example my Clanbound Everlux. He WAS hideous, I don't remember his exact combo but he was unworkable (pretty sure his primary was yellow?). So I scattered him, and got 1 off XYY in my first try [emoji=everlux star size=1]

my first try
I scattered special dragons with colours I don't like.
g1 that I hatched on my bday from obelisk statue,
special ID (he was XYY but ugly to me) and another special day hatch, this time
New Year. it is usually yeah, special hatch day and/or ID. scatters are too costy that I scatter whatever dragon, at that point I would rather buy nice g1.
I am not picky anyway (I mean yes but also not so much when it is my own hatch) - I see scatters that for me, take too much while I personaly seek whatever that can work, and I get to be flexible. I don't seek doubles/tripples or "you must be all pink", just. "ah you not so ugly in my eyes"

Dragons with colour combinations that I do not like at all are in priority position. I scatter them first. They may not get ideal colours but something tolerable.
This
guy is my latest scatter target.

Usually hatched G1s or special dragons I still like but whose colors need some work. I don't make a lot of gems yet so I really only scatterscroll once in a blue moon.

I have done two scatter projects so far. One was for a date, the other was a G2 Imp.
For me it would just be a dragon that has something special about it (so special ID, special date, something like a G2 Imp) that I don't like the current look of.

I do it on dragons that have some sort of special reason to be kept, but their colors are bad or just uninspiring for me to work with. So I've done it with a level 25 I had that I trained up myself but I didn't like his colors anymore, my hatch from the first Bogsneak egg I ever brewed (his colors were genuinely awful), and one of my release Auraboas who had colors were fine but not scryable into something I personally liked.
And since I'm not at all picky about what I get as long as I can scry a plan I enjoy, they were all just a single scatter to get a good outcome! (Plus I don't have the funds to get into a big scatter journey anyway.)

Typically dragons i'm just attached to for sentimental reasons, usually in order of 'which one's current colors annoy/bother me the most today'
Pamela here was one of the first dragons i bought as a newbie (i wanna say the 3rd or 4th?), and while her original colors were fine, I wasn't crazy about them, so she got scattered and almost entirely regened (from iri/shim/glim to poi/bee/glim)... and 9 scatters later, she's gorgeous (to me, at least)
She's no g1, special ID or anything, just precious memory of my newbie days

I'm also currently in process of scattering my custom progen because i got tired of her colors and uh... that is not going very swimmingly right now unfortunately

To be honest, my random progen was the only scatter project I ever did and will likely remain the only one I'll ever do.
It feels like a waste of Gems when I can easily buy/sell the dragon instead! Stream (my random) was different because he's tied to my lair, I can't simply buy a new progen lol. All the more power to those who choose to scatter but it's not personally for me.

The only two dragons I've ever scattered were a G1 Primal (back when they were super expensive and I wanted one— it was more cost efficient to scatter into pretty colors than to buy pretty colors. That is no longer true, obviously!) and a 6-digit born the exact same day as my progens.
The 6-digit immediately scattered into something bright and colorful that only I could love (an exaggeration, probably, but not by much) and I kept it. I could go back to that scatter journey anytime if I decide I want something differently appealing and it would still be worth it to me, but since I like it… hey, why not enjoy it while I still do?
The G1 Primal… I don't remember how many scatters she took but it was definitely under 10, because that was the limit I set myself for how many I would use before giving it up for a lost cause and reselling her back to the Primal market and not be at too much of a loss. (Again, they were so expensive back then, and I'd saved up for her deliberately.)
Edit: probably also worth noting that within those 10 scatters, she scattered into an XYX of one of my favorite colors, Orchid, so like… even though her value has technically crashed, I don't regret the experience at all. It's not like I was going to resell her after that!
These days… the dragon would have to be specifically sentimental or valuable enough that I'd be able to not lose too much money by scattering. Scattering is fun for the same reason as hatching eggs, but it's risky and costs more. It does, however, get a little safer if you like weird color combos and aren't looking for something specific.

So far I've only scattered a gen2 imp, but I'm contemplating scattering my random progen. For me, scattering is a last resort- is the dragon completely irreplacable / sentimental, and are the colors completely unsalvageable?
