you know what? support. why not??? this seems so useful and honestly i know a ton of people would appreciate having the ability to choose older versions of genes. especially considering the art for the old genes is just lying around serving no purpose, why not make it serve a purpose? it'd earn a ton more money too as an upside. im certain that majority of players would use this feature if implemented. also this idea kinda reminds me of the secret styles from slime rancher lol it's great

and ive gotta say i love all of the ideas that have been come up with for this concept. here are some that i like the most;
high contrast tiger stripes
stained gradient
stained glass capsule
gradient glimmer
brighter firefly
secondary colours for wasp
accent colour paint/piebald
vein accent colours

edit: i'd also really like alloy with a gradient ^_^

Coming back to say I think this would be especially great for ancient breeds! Some examples:
 • Variants of festival genes eg. Brightshine without the head fans, untorn riot/moles, rockbreaker with accent colours for the geodes' exteriors, trickmurk with accent colours instead of fading from black, wavecrest with accent colours instead of blue, mistral w/ accent colours etc etc
 • Gnarlhorns without the overgrown claws
 • Mop without accent colours
 • Beard without the longer whiskers
 • Medusa in different 'styles'
 • Antlers without neck fur / with accent colours
 • Augment with accent colours instead of black
 • Spores without extra particles
 • Space without the shoulder tendrils
 • Stinger without body segments / Stinger without gradient on body segments
 • Remora without eye thingies
 • Kumo, wish, topcoat, weathered, etc. with a gradient to accent colour
 • Wish but glowy?

Support!! This'd be amazing for moderns, but I'd absolutely LOVE for it to be on ancients. It'd offer another level of customization for ancient dragons that they don't have, and give another incentive for having them in your lair.

I really like coming back to this thread just to see all the new ideas and stuff coming in - still really support this idea and hope it become a feature in the future, especially with how many genes and ancients we already have :)

I still really like this idea, and I wanted to add that this would be great for updating older genes to be consistent in quality with newer ones and newer breeds. A great example is cherub, the post about it by icykeys in the general forum is actually what makes me come back to this suggestion.
icykeys
I prefer the newer style cherub is drawn in, I think it would look fantastic on coatls. Make variants a thing and people who prefer the new or old style can have it on the newer or older breeds.
I can't remember if I've commented on this or not in the past as this is a couple years old, and I'm not so sure about the suggested system of like picking between variants... that sounds needlessly complicated.... Though I suppose with Glass & Gloss now you could do a trade-in type system. Would give them more functionality since there was no plan to move mp or swipp genes over to them, which was a lot of people's issue with the whole ancient gene system to begin with (the mp being cluttered and such).... Would be on-theme for them too as offering "bootleg genes" that aren't quite "right" sounds right up their alley. But I definitely do support the idea of re-releasing variants (the v1 versions of genes that sometimes come out as error-ed rather than how they should look). That gives us more options and variety, and some of them produce new and interesting looks that can't be accomplished with anything currently available. Like the v1 banescale metallic/aloy gene mentioned in the OP- we don't have a bright shiny metal set of genes, currently metallic/alloy are very dark and soap brings in an entirely different color that goes on top. I wouldn't want every gene to get a variant, but mainly just the ones that are big and noticeable. Like the v1 bane met/alloy or the v1 boa wick/wove. Or the v1 boa met/alloy that looked like a gummy. Stuff like that.
I feel like giving each ancient three variants for a couple tertiaries would suffice. Staff would only then have to make six scrolls per breed. Glass and Gloss would trade u the standard ancient tertiary parchment for a random [tertiary] variety 1, 2 or 3 scroll specific to your breed. Like: Ancient Parchment for Skeletal to randomly selected Aberration Skeletal Var2 Or rather ancient parchment to Bargain Bin Special 2 Alternatively u could make this event tied. Only having Marva provide her totally unflawed, extra cheap but totally quality Bargain Bin [fill in the blank gene]. Maybe have Marvas trades just be the gene parchment u have + some gravel. In which case modern primaries might be better choices? (I don’t know if staff keep the old art codes though, they’d probably need to make updated versions of what we currently have?)
