TOPIC | Baby's first breeding project
Hi nyall, Uh, long story short, I'm doing my first breeding project, and it's a fairly ambitious one (#4869904), so perhaps I brought this upon myself, but... I forgot. That smirch is a limited gene. Not a rare one. And that the good ol' "smirching your dragons" breeding tactic works great if you're going for a limited or less rare gene, but. I want soap. Soooooo now I have two otherwise PERFECT dragons for my project, but since I smirched 'em, my chance of hatching a dragon with soap just dropped to 3/97. And I cannot afford to buy rare gene scrolls. For now I guess I'll grind until I can afford 2 rare scrolls, but if anyone has any secret tips, let me know? [emoji=fae sad size=1] Your pal, Ooopsey

@Ooopsey My one tip would be to say don't bother gening the parents unless you plan on keeping them around as a soap breeding pair long-term. Wait until you've got the final dragon you want and then you'll only have to gene one dragon.

start by reading ganondorf's breeding guide. if you have the space, i recommend the pyramid method.

general breeding project tips:

compare dragons in assay bloodlines BEFORE you buy them, unless they're selling for fodder price, in which case buy first. you can always re-sell for fodder price if they're no good, and it ensures you have the time to work that out before someone else buys them.

prioritise breeding for colours, and gem genes. look up how much the non-gem genes cost, and decide whether you'd rather breed for those or buy the scrolls.

remember that even one parent with the wrong gem gene will straight-up halve your chances of getting your goal, so if at all possible try to get as many parents as you can with the correct gem gene.

you should only ever apply gene scrolls to the goal dragon itself, assuming the parents exist for the sole purpose of creating it.

you might as well exalt the dragons that you mistakenly gave smirch (assuming you don't intend to keep them anyway) and start again with parents that actually have soap.

if your parents are breeds with long cooldowns, and assuming your budget allows for it, you may find it helpful to turn the parents into two different plentiful breeds (for that slight boost in 3-egg nests), then breedchange the goal dragon once it hatches. if the parents are of breeds that have a long cooldown, turning them into plentifuls can massively speed up your breeding project.

obviously if your goal is an imperial you can't do this.

...You know what, I read that entire guide and bungled it anyway lol. Ah well. With your point about just using gene scrolls directly on the goal dragon, though, that does mean I can still use the guys I smirched, which is great :3 thanks for the reminder! appreciate your advice :)
