TOPIC | Official Effects Bugs Megathread
Please post your effects bugs here.

To help with troubleshooting, include your browser, browser version, operating system, and any relevant browser settings (hardware acceleration, limit motion, etc).

You do not need to post if your issue is listed below under "Work in progress" or "Working as intended or a current limitation of the system".

Screenshots and details are always welcome.

Fixed Issues
  1. Some effects do not display properly on dragons with silhouette scrolls.
This is now fixed. However, it may take time for older forum posts to show this change. You can force a post to display the fixed effect by editing your post (make some actual change to the post text) and re-saving it.
  2. In the Game Database, effects display breadcrumbs from the "Other" category instead of the "Specialty Items" category.
Effects are now properly sorted under the "Specialty Items" category.
  3. In the forum, effects to do not obey text alignment tags.
Effects will now follow text alignment tags.
  4. Filtering effect status within the lair while in edit mode is broken.
Dragons with effects will now be properly highlighted while in edit mode.
  5. List of owned effects flickers when applying or removing an effect from a dragon.
Effect items will no longer flicker when altering effects.
  6. Scenic mode export is broken.
The original scenic mode export code has been restored, although it has a new button location. Please note: Export will fail in cases where scenic mode itself is broken. We are still working on improving compatibility and accessibility issues that prevent scenic mode from loading.
  7. Scenic mode does not work properly on deities.
Deities will now properly display in scenic mode on devices that support WebGL. This fix does not resolve underlying compatibility issues on some hardware.
  8. Some effects only partially work on some hardware.
An update to all effects should resolve most, if not all, cases of partially functional effects on Dragon Profiles and new forum posts. This fix will eventually work its way to older forum posts as the cached copies of those posts expire. This will not fix more serious compatibility issues that result in completely non-functional effects or effects that are turned off through operating system accessibility settings or browser limitations. Those are separate bugs that we are still working on.
  9. Some effects do not display properly on dragons with reflect scrolls.
Dragons with active reflect scrolls now display properly.
  10. Some effect + apparel + breed combinations cause a strange "bleed" stripe that stretches to the edge of the image.
Dragons artwork no longer stretches to the edge of the image.
  11. Dragon artwork jumps slightly when the profile page loads.
Dragons should no longer jump when loading.
  12. Operating system level accessibility settings will now pause effects instead of disabling them entirely. Please use caution when playing effects.
  13. Animation of the play/pause button is currently bugged and will pop up instantly on hover for most browsers.
We have decided to remove the animation of the play/pause button to be more consistent with other hover actions.
  14. Some browser and operating systems do not allow you to save a still image of your dragon on the dragon profile when that dragon has an effect applied.
You can now use the Effect Image option in the Share Dragon menu to save a PNG of your dragon with effects applied.

Please note: We intend to revamp the "Share Dragon" menu, as the old layout no longer suits all the functions we hope for it to have. Please let us know in the Suggestions Forum if you have ideas about what this menu should include.
  15. Exported PNGs for the Glitz effect are oversaturated on some browsers.
The Glitz effect has been altered to avoid this export issue. Other effects will be fixed as well if the issue is found in other cases.
  16. Effects don't work properly with Marva's Invisibility Cloak.
Dragon effects paired with a Marva's Invisibility Cloak will now function correctly.
  17. We are now classifying the following effect behavior as a bug and are working on a fix. When you apply Marva’s Cloak to a dragon with certain Dragon-Only effects, the dragon breed’s lineart and shadows would still display.
Marva's Cloak now properly hides dragon lineart and shadows.
  18. The Sunrise, Moonrise now has the correct item icon. This may take a while to show up correctly in older forum posts.
  19. Sixteen Bit effect renders low opacity pixels at full opacity. This makes some glowing style genes and apparel look odd. This effect will no longer sample low opacity pixels. Older forum posts will take time to catch up.
  20. boot_dragon(green) effect crops dragon silhouettes in unusual ways. See: hatchling bogsneak tongue. Dragons will no longer be oddly cropped when using this effect.
  21. Sixteen Bit effect colors differ significantly from a dragon's actual colors. This effect will now render more accurate colors.
  22. We have rebalanced how semitransparent pixels are handled in the following effects: Sixteen Bit, Dot Matrix Downgrade, Cathode. Pixels with less than 50% opacity will be ignored. This restricts fewer than the old 90% opacity threshold.

Marva's Cloak Example
This dragon is displaying an cosmetic effect. What follows is the item description: The tides are shifting... this item obscures an entire dragon and its apparel in translucent bubbles, while refractive patterns of blue light ebb and flow across them. Like apparel, skins, and scenes, effects are purely cosmetic items that can be added and removed from dragons at any time.
Press this button to play this dragon's animated effect. Press this button to pause this dragon's animated effect.
This dragon is showing off…
Effect: Beryl Plunge
Effect: Beryl Plunge
Renee is displayed as a fallback image due to an error while loading Effect: Beryl Plunge effect.
This is a static effect.

Work in Progress
  1. Some effects don't work at all on some hardware. We are continuing to research compatibility issues.
  2. Dither effect is not working on some hardware that supports other effects.

Working as intended or a Current Limitation of the System
  1. Some effects make use of a dragon breed's base line and shadow artwork. As a result, these effects may look different than you might expect on dragons with line breaking genes, skins/accents, or various eye types. This is a known limitation of the system.
  2. Effects do not work on Apparel or Scene customization pages within the dragon profile or within the dragon lair. This is currently intended. It is very possible that we will expand the number of pages where effects work. At the moment, effects only function on the main dragon profile, game database, customization hub page, apply effect page, and forum. Effects also work in many areas where you type BBCode.
  3. Effects that are listed as "Dragon only" alter eyes, genes, skins and accents. This is intended. "Dragon only" refers to all artwork that exists below the apparel level.

Troubleshooting Steps
  1. Make sure that you hover over or click/touch on the dragon effect to verify whether or not the play/pause button shows up.
  2. Test is effects work in a different area of the site (Forum, Game Database, Dragon Profile)
  3. Check if your device is set to "reduce animations" or "limit motion". These settings are often found under your operating system's accessibility settings. If they are turned on, effects will not work.
  4. Try a second browser
  5. Try a second device

If you see a broken square instead of an effect, it's likely that your computer or mobile device supports the technology we use to generate effects, but failed in the attempt. It may have reached a limit in the number of effects it can display at one time or had issues processing the effect.

If you see a static dragon with no effect and no pause/play button when hovering, your device has indicated that it does not support the technology we use to generate effects or is bypassing the effect due to a system setting. In this case, make sure you do not have animations turned off on your device.

If you do see a pause/play button when hovering, but the effect does not work (or only partially works) after pressing play, this suggests that an effect isn't being processed correctly by your hardware. Work is ongoing to make effects as fully compatible as possible. Look closely to be sure that the effect isn't playing. Some effects, like Pastel Pulse and Shinescale are very subtle, especially on certain dragons.

Please limit posts in this thread to bugs or troubleshooting.

If you have feedback about how Effects can be improved, post those suggestions in the Suggestions Forum.

If you are experiencing an issue that has already been reported, you do not need to repost the issue.

A running list of reported issues can be found above.

Posts clarifying already reported bugs or providing additional information are always welcome and appreciated.

Thank you!

I'll just scoot this over here real quick! [quote name="Eaglefairy" date="2025-02-12 13:49:42" ] I was looking at pastel pulse on some of my dragons and noticed that it seems to override Beetle with the base lineart. Unfortunately I can't confirm if this happens to any other breeds or genes. I'm on current-version Firefox (128.7.0) and MacOS. I'm not sure how to get more pictures since I can't copy and paste the preview images, but swirl eyes have extra circles inside of them, and male Aberrations, (possibly due to augment gene?) have small dots floating around their horns.

not sure if this is intended, but the pupils of the dragon show up when using pastel pulse even if the dragon has primal eyes on the permababy abby model, undetermined if this is the case with other primals or models, though example (original dragon vs effect side by side) [url=https://www1.flightrising.com/dragon/78406460][img]https://www1.flightrising.com/rendern/350/784065/78406460_350.png[/img][/url] [effect dragon=78406460] edit: it seems to do this with coatl permababies too this happens with all permababies, looking into it further, all the eyes are reset to the default common eye type

[center]Not sure if a bug or intended, but people are addressing similar things here as well, so I thought I'd bring it up! It seems Pastel Pulse doesn't work with any primal gaze dragon. Tested on multiple elements, but here's a preview with a shadow primal dragon: [img]https://i.imgur.com/mibPPWH.png[/img][url=https://www1.flightrising.com/dragon/72032851][img]https://www1.flightrising.com/rendern/350/720329/72032851_350.png[/img][/url] It isn't that the gaze is disappearing, but that it's completely covering their eyes. It's more egregious on less drippy primal types, such as earth.
