Biography

Riki is seven when he first touches the Lightning.

His claws burn under the scorching heat of every spark, and his parents cower away from him, but he’s entranced by the sparks that dance on his palm, under his scales and through his whole body. His eyes see for the first time, and Riki has never been in love with Lightning more than ever.

When his eyes glow bright and smell of ozone, he’s put to the wayside. His parents abandon him. Riki doesn’t care - parents stopped being soft touches, warm laughter and safety after he first sneezed out a spark. Parents are just people who give you the bare minimum, Riki thinks. He’s glad to be rid of them, for sure. They were just nuisances that would stutter and fidget around him.

Riki wanders. Riki wanders and he develops a love for knowledge along the way, enjoying every scrap of information strangers could spare him and stealing every scroll he managed to find. He’s called the Spark-Eyed Fae, he knows, and every clan is sure to lend him their library in fear of accidentally offending the Stormcatcher. (He finds out that Lightning elementals like him are treasured, and for some reason, he begins to feel a part of him wither and die away. Riki tries to be kinder after this occurrence.)

He doesn’t know stability. Of course, he understands the meaning of the word (the state of being at peace, in control and having security in life). But he’s never had a place to call home, never been truly accepted for who he is in any clan, never been offered a place to stay before.

The Lightning is always with him, warm humming beneath his scales and the peacefulness that comes with a companion. The Lightning is enough for him. The Lightning is enough for him. The Lightning is enough for him.

Riki wants to settle down in his homeland, but the thought of spark-eyed fae deters him and he wanders to the other nations. He finds the Arcane Flight jarring, a crowd of dragons just like him, yet completely different. When their gazes slide across him, he’s strangely unnerved and wishes he wasn’t like them. (They’re analytical, cruel and emotionless in a way that he can never imagine himself to be. Their crests are a language only they can understand, and RIki knows, he knows why they didn’t want him now.)

(He’s a Fae, and Fae are emotionless and cruel.)

(He doesn’t want to be this way.)

He falls asleep in Water territory one day, deciding to venture across the land of the sea-dwellers. The salt in the wind smells refreshing, and Riki likes it.

The Spark-Eyed Fae falls asleep in Water territory one day, and wakes up as a Coatl.

Riki smiles. He’s never been able to do that before, and hysterical laughter bubbles out of him. It felt- weird, being so large and expressive, but it feels so natural in a way that he can’t help but fall in love with this new body. (Then, Riki sees the ones who suffer, and the ones that cause their suffering. He doesn’t smile quite as much now, and he holds his face in a neutral state. He’ll smile when the recipient deserves it.)

Riki finds a beach, framed with gold and lined with blue.

Riki finds a dragon with their head in the clouds, and he can’t help but wonder who they are. Riki examines the shells on the sand, and traces his claws over every pattern and notch.

(Their voice is soft and airy. He’s entranced by the melodic quality of their voice, and he can’t help but want for more.)

He goes back to the beach often. He thinks, maybe, just maybe, he’s found a home. (Home is where his best memories are formed. Home is where he sees them, delighted and surprised at the sight of fish that he had caught earlier. Home is where they laugh under the stars together. Home is where Riki feels accepted.)

He doesn’t realise, but he spends most of his days (and nights) at the beach. He doesn’t realise, but he cares for them and helps them take care of themself. He treasures the one gift they had unknowingly gave him, a casual gesture from them, but something irreplaceable to him. (It’s a conch shell, one filled with echoes of the sea.)

Riki doesn’t fall in love. Falling would imply that he’d landed himself in trouble, but being in love with them was a different thing. Riki is drawn to them, drawn to the way water flicks out of their talons and the way light encircles their face. He- he wants to be with them.

Then they become Chizuru and Riki’s world finally comes together in a brilliant moment and Chizuru-

Chizuru’s gone and it’s all Riki’s fault. It’s all Riki’s fault. He cries until he has no more tears left to cry, and he holds Chizuru’s body to his chest. He swears he hears a faint heartbeat, and he promises Chizuru that he’ll bring them back.

He builds a clan in Chizuru’s absence. He never snaps at his fellow clanmates, because what would Chizuru say if they were here? He’s the perfect leader, they say, and he does his best. But he’s not here for the clan.

He’s here for Chizuru, and he pours every last drop of his Lightning into Chizuru.

If Lightning took them away, wouldn’t it bring them back?

He does everything. He’s tired, but he can’t rest until he brings Chizuru back. He holds the shell they gave him to his chest. He prays, and he cries.

At midnight, he falls asleep next to Chizuru. He’s- he can’t miss the day when Chizuru will wake up. (Stray tears fall onto a conch shell, and memories of a summer shine golden.)

“Riki? Riki, Riki,” He hears, and he jolts awake, because he hasn’t heard that voice in so, so long, and he sobs.

“Chizuru. Chizuru, Chizuru,” he repeats, and he lets his regret run free.

I’m so sorry, Chizuru.
