 No one knew what Hana did on moonless nights.

They knew that no one had seen her past sunset, nor would they see her again until the following midday. They knew that sometimes things would go missing - never anything large or essential, but knickknacks and things from the kitchen and clawfuls of Pitys' herbs would unaccountably disappear on a schedule peculiarly timed to the lunar cycle.

They knew that there were storms - even after remarkably clear days - that peaked right around midnight. They knew the lightning strikes were terribly close, and always in the same direction. They knew that the storms on these nights, more than any others, would distress the hatchlings and the travelers spending the night.

More than anything, they knew they would never ask her why.
