"Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. / Meanwhile the world goes on. / Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain / are moving across the landscapes, / over the prairies and the deep trees, / the mountains and the rivers. / Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. / Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, / the world offers itself to your imagination, / calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting - / over and over announcing your place / in the family of things."

The world is a thing tended.
It is work, to be in the world, and it takes care, time, and effort, like a seed that, once planted, needs the diligent looking after by an observant, kind soul. So Gabriel came into this world: kind, sweet, and loving; ever-attentive, ever-watchful. Near silent, but always listening, Gabriel is a dragon bent on tending to the needs of all others before his own. But more than this, he was willing to put in the hard work to do it; to care and nurture good relationships, much like the gardens he used to tend at his mother's home. For Gabriel, peace came not in great finery, or ardent praise of his deeds, but in the humble toil of good earth and rich soil, of tree and bush. Where there was life, so there was Gabriel, drawn ever-always to that which sought to bring life, heal it, foster it, than destroy it. And so, in time, he found himself in the kingdom of The Atheneum, originally a pilgrim, a citizen looking for that perfect place to call his own. And so, in passing, he heard of the luscious, verdant gardens tended by the Great Queen herself, her pride and joy. Enamored by the prospect of seeing this enriched place of legend, he came a pilgrim humble and stayed a royal caretaker. Amira, tending her garden diligently, spotted a young dragon wandering her garden with awe and reverence, and in him, she saw the gift of a healer, a nurturer, a tender. And so she offered Gabriel a place, a place in her gardens to tend them with her as he pleased, to hold no obligation other than to love his work, and be kind to the place she had built with her own hands. So Gabriel promised; his shy, reserved self brightening and bubbling at the idea of getting to tend such an extensive, well-loved garden. And so Gabriel has stayed. The near-silent, rather shy, but precious dragon who nurtures the fruits of the earth with delight, and fosters the relationships around him with the same diligence and love. | xxxxx |
